History 101 Discussion 5-1 Post Apartheid in South Africa...

Description

Discussion: Research Plan

Topic: Apartheid in South Africa First Question: What is the meaning of South African Apartheid? Revised: What role did the South African government play in Apartheid? Second Question: What measures were taken to change apartheid; how did it impact the people of South Africa? Revised: How did Nelson Mandela’s life and imprisonment change apartheid in South Africa?

Thesis Statement: The South African Apartheid which was a system of legal racial segregation enforced by the national party government was in effect from 1948 through 1994. The ANC (African National Congress) leader Nelson Mandela was released from prison in February 1990, and worked closely with President F. W. de Klerk’s government to end racial segregation and to draw up a new constitution for South Africa. Checklist for conducting further research: 

Look at all of the resources to get a clear understanding of why the government felt the need to initiate segregation.

Research the economic and social effects of the apartheid

Research as to why the apartheid started, what event/events took place that may have caused the apartheid.

Dig deeper into Mandela’s letters to get a clear and better understanding of how his words/actions started the change that lead to the end of apartheid in South Africa.

Identify relevant sources and process used: O’Malley The Heart of Hope is a great resource as it contains the actual letters written by Nelson Mandela giving details about the steps taken to end apartheid in South Africa. This information will help me in narrowing down the research information. Apartheid retrieved from the History.com website has many different historical aspects, using this source will help me get a better understanding of how apartheid beganAnother secondary source would be Nelson Mandela’s autobiography “Long Walk to Freedom” this book gives you insight to the apartheid through the eyes of Mandela who lived through years of imprisonment for treason and while in prison continued the fight to end apartheid in South Africa, ultimately succeeding.
