Description

Introduction to Numerical Methods MWF 11-11:50 Online, mostly Fall 2020

Instructor: Russell Brown Office: POT963 Phone: 859 257 3951 [email protected] Office hours: MWF 10-10:50 and by appointment.

Bulletin description: Floating point arithmetic. Numerical linear algebra: elimination with partial pivoting and scaling. Poly- nomial and piecewise interpolation. Least squares approximation. Numerical integration. Roots of nonlinear equations. Ordinary differential equations. Laboratory exercises using software packages available at computer center. Student learning outcomes: Students will be able to find numerical approximations of solutions to mathematical problems. Students will be able to describe the sources of error in numerical procedures. Students will be able to compare efficiency of numerical procedures. Text: Numerical Methods and Computing, 7th edition E. Ward Cheney and David R. Kincaid. Grading: Your grade will be based on homework, quizzes and exams. Two midterm exams 35% Final exam 25% Homework 15% Quizzes 25% There will be approximately 10 homework assignments throughout the semester. These should be submitted by a group and the name of each group member marked clearly on the paper. Homeworks will be due on Monday. Quizzes will be given on most Fridays as marked on the schedule and will be based on homework problems and additional practice problems. Collaboration: You should work together and may use other resources for homework. Students are expected to submit solutions to homework as a group of up to three students. Groups will be assigned initially and will rotate throughout the semester. For homework assignments, I suggest that students attempt to solve as many problems as they can and then share the results with the group a day or two before the due date. Students may then review each other’s work and prepare a final document to submit by the due date. Students may collaborate using the Collaboration Space in our Class Notebook or another convenient method. Students should not collaborate during exams or quizzes. Thus, it is important that you develop a complete understanding of each homework problem as you work with your group. Exams and quizzes will be open book and taken in an unproctored setting. Students may use course materials and the textbook on exams or quizzes. It is important

that the work you submit for quizzes and exams is your own work. If you use material from another source in constructing a solution to homework, you should acknowledge the source. Office hours: Office hours will be held on Zoom! and by appointment. You may make appointments through Canvas and I welcome group as well as individual appointments. The Zoom link to reach me is https://uky.zoom.us/my/rbrown. If you need to schedule an appointment at a time different from the regularly scheduled office hours, please send me an email with a list of several times you can meet and I will fix an appointment for one of these times. Supplemental references: Several books which cover the material of this course include: • Numerical Analysis by R. Burden and J.D. Faires • Afternotes on numerical analysis, G.W. Stewart. Midterm grades: Mid-term grades will be posted in myUK by the deadline established in the Academic Calendar. Attendance: Students should attend regularly, but attendance will not directly affect your grade. If a student misses an assignment or exam for an unexcused absence, there will be a deduction of 10% of the grade for each day that the work is late. Work missed due to an excused absence will be accepted, subject to Senate Rule 5.2.4.2. Make up work: Notes from each class and all assignments will be posted in Canvas. Students who are quarantined should be able to continue with the course. Students who do not feel well enough to continue working should speak with the instructor about making up work or being excused from work. Students with other excused absences are responsible for informing the Instructor of Record about their excused absence within one week following the period of the excused absence (except where prior notification is required); and for making up the missed work. The instructor must give the student an opportunity to make up the work and/or the exams missed due to the excused absence, and shall do so, if feasible, during the semester in which the absence occurred. The instructor shall provide the student with an opportunity to make up the graded work and may not simply calculate the student’s grade on the basis of the other course requirements, unless the student agrees in writing. Verification of excused absences: Students may be asked to verify their absences in order for them to be considered excused. Senate Rule 5.2.4.2 states that faculty have the right to request appropriate verification when students claim an excused absence due to: significant illness; death in the household, trips for classes, trips sponsored by an educational unit and trips for participation related to intercollegiate athletic events; and interviews for full-time job opportunities after

graduation and interviews for graduate and professional school. (Appropriate notification of absences due to University-related trips is required prior to the absence when feasible and in no case more than one week after the absence.) Accomodations due to disability: : Accommodations Due to Disability: If you have a documented disability that requires academic accommodations, please see me as soon as possible during scheduled office hours. In order to receive accommodations in this course, you must provide me with a Letter of Accommodation from the Disability Resource Center (DRC). The DRC coordinates campus disability services available to students with disabilities. It is located on the corner of Rose Street and Huguelet Drive in the Multidisciplinary Science Building, Suite 407. You can reach them via phone at (859) 257-2754 and via email at [email protected]. Their web address is http://www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/DisabilityResourceCenter/. Face covering and distancing policy: : We are in the midst of serious public health emergency. Please be responsible by wearing a mask and minimizing opportunities to expose each other to the virus SARS-CoV-2. If there is a large outbreak of COVID-19, we may have to close the University and switch back to fully online learning. • In accordance with University guidelines, students must wear UK-approved face coverings in the classroom and academic buildings (e.g., faculty offices, laboratories, libraries, performance/design studios, and common study areas where students might congregate). If UK-approved face coverings are not worn over the nose and mouth, students will be asked to leave the classroom. • Students should complete their daily online wellness screening before accessing university facilities and arriving to class. • Students should not move chairs or barriers in classrooms and should socially distance at all times, leaving a six (6) foot radius from other people. Masks and hand sanitizer can be found specific location in building if needed. • Students should leave enough space when entering and exiting a room. Students should not crowd doorways at the beginning or end of class. • The instructor may choose to remove a mask when pedagogically necessary at the front of the classroom and behind a clear barrier. The instructor’s mask will be replaced when it is no longer necessary to have it removed, or when the class meeting is complete.
