American Sign Language This assignment provides me three videos in order to help me gaining an adequate understanding of American Sign Language. The first attached video is “A Few Things to Know About American Sign Language – NPR”, this video was released on April 15, 2017. Background information is here are a few things to know about American Sign Language from five people who use it every day. This video breaks down so many concerns about American Sign Language such as the differences between Sign Language around the world, the accent in American Sign Language. Moreover, five people in the video shared their experiences in Sign Language, they pointed out many different kinds of sign languages that I haven’t known before. Interestingly, those five people shared that different countries have different accent of sign language; especially, Black deaf people have an unique accent, and they have a few special signs to represent their special phrases in common conversation. The female in the video said “Remember ASL is very different from English. ASL is its own bonafide language with grammatical rules.” American Sign Language has its own grammatical rules and word order; however, it depends on different people, it has different way of word order. In conclusion, ASL is very unique and special, because deaf people who was born in different countries, they are also able to understand American Sign Language and also the other Sign languages, the only different is the style of signing. The second video is “What is Black American Sign Language?”, this video was released on Jun 2, 2020. “Just like spoken language, sign languages have dialect. Black ALS is the unique dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) that developed with

historically segregated African American Deaf communities.” This short video helps me getting a perspective of how American Sign Language is in Black community, and the video reveals how Black people use ASL, how they interact with the others from their community, and how they feel when they are growing up with Black American Sign Language. An old lady from the video said “Black ASL paints pictures and express messages in ways that just bring another layer and another flavor to the whole notion of what Black language is.” In my opinion, I feel Black ASL is really special in some ways that I cannot explain, but I feel more energy when I see them signing; honestly, it’s really inspired. From this video, I learn how Black ASL is special, and especially how ASL affects positively on deaf people. The last video is the origin of ASL – A Brief History, this video was released on February 19, 2012, and this video is about learning the brief history of American Sign Language (ASL), and where it came from. This video is to tell the viewers about how ASL was created, who did it, and the story behind American Sign Language. American Sign Language was influenced by a French Man named Lauren Clerc, he sail to America with Thomas Gallaudet who was a hearing man with a hope of teaching deaf children, Thomas Gallaudet found Lauren Clerc who had a method to teach and communicate with deaf children. Then, when they came to America, they established a Deaf School in Hartford, Connecticut which was called American School for the Deaf. Moreover, the man from the video breaks down the different between American Sign Language and British Sign Language; beside that, he pointed out the similar points between American Sign Language and French Sign Language. “In BSL alphabets, they use both hands” that man said. In my opinion, there are so many interesting facts behind sign languages and especially sign languages from different countries. In conclusion, I learn from this video the differences between British Sign Language,

American Sign Language, and French Sign Language; moreover, how American Sign Language was influenced by French sign Language about few points....
