Description

Imagination Inflation Imagination inflation is a type of memory distortion that occurs when imagining an event that never happened and increases confidence in the memory of the event. Several factors have been shown to amplify the inflationary effect of the imagination. The imagination of a fake event increases familiarity and people make mistakes. this familiarity as evidence that they experienced the event. Imagination inflation can also be the result of source confusion or source monitoring errors. When they imagine a wrong event, people generate information about the event that is often stored in their memory. Later they may remember the content of the memory, but not its source, and mistakenly relate the remembered information to a real experience. This effect is relevant for the study of memory and cognition, especially for false memory. Imagination inflation is common in attempts to recall repressed memories (i.e., through Reclaimed Memory Therapy) and can lead to the development of false or distorted memories. In the criminal justice system, imagination inflation is linked to false confessions as police interrogation practices lead suspects to imagine they are committing or planning the crime in question....
