Death and Dying
Death is a part of natural life; however, society is notorious for being uncomfortable with death and dying as a topic overall. In the video titled Perspectives on Death: Crash Course Philosophy #17, Hank Green explains that “how you feel death has probably been shaped by your beliefs about whether or not there’s an afterlife, and if there is, what it’s like” (H. Green, Perspectives on Death: Crash Course Philosophy #17, 2016). Religion, philosophy, and science have struggled to indicate a universal definition of death, nonetheless, medical and legal experts often use brain death as a precautionary measure to determine that a person is dead (Rathus, S. A, 2020). The end of life is not an easy topic to talk about, since not all people see death the same way, but I think that those differences are what let us increase our understanding of our lives’ final chapter. Some of the most common fears or phobias are associated with the unknown, such as the fear of the ocean. Some people fear the ocean because it is deep and dark, and we do not know what is there. The same idea goes when you think of death, the difference is, that if you are afraid of the ocean, you can decide whether to go or not, whereas if you are afraid to die, you cannot decide whether to die or not, it will just eventually happen.
