DEBATE ASSIGNMENT

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT This assignment requires research, imagination, and logic in applying the content of this course and the readings. The topic of the debate will be presented in class. There is also a video of an actual debate on the same topic in the libguide. You will then research the topic and prepare an outline that supports your position on the topic with supporting evidence. The outline will be in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), typed, Times Roman or Arial, Font 12, 1” margins, APA citations and references. The completed document should be no less than two pages and no more than four pages, not including the reference list. Put your name in the heading of the document.





The reference list should have no less than five (5) quality references. Please include in-text citations. Note: Wikipedia does not quality as academic resources.

GROUP ASSIGNMENT In groups, students will prepare for an in-class debate. Students should work together to prepare for the debate using information from their individual assignments. Two teams will be debating against each other at a time. All the teams will be competing against each other for the highest number of points achieved in the debate (as assigned by the faculty member). The debate will follow the following format:  

Opening Position Statement (2 minutes for each group) Reason 1 & two supporting arguments (2 minutes for each group)

   

Rebuttal (1 minute per group) Reason 2 & two supporting arguments (2 minutes for each group) Rebuttal (1 minute per group) Closing arguments (1 minute per group)
