Defining Culture and Society from The Perspectives of
Values – define what is right and what is wrong, good or bad, moral or immoral in a society. Norms – definite guidelines of behavior based on values. Folkways (Fashions and Fads) - conventions of everyday life that members of the society are expected to follow but violation is not considered serious. Mores – set of morals usually determine by the society not by the government or people who practices religion.
Technology - most important component of modern culture. Ethnocentrism (ethno and centric) and automatically finding those other cultural practices . -the belief that your native culture is the of understanding the world. Concept of Culture Culture -cultura – translated as "to cultivate" -"a complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, art, law, customs, and any capabilities, and habits acquired by the people as members of society." - Edward Tylor -dynamic system that does not stand outside human beings. Culture is a very atmosphere that human beings brief in everyday life. Superbasic, influenced that people hardly notice it. Yet culture is not something static. It is always constant lacks of change. Importance of Culture: Culture is a design for living or a blueprint for social behavior >culture serves as standards that dictates the expected and acceptable behavior within a society to achieve harmony and cooperation. Culture also provides people with ready-made solutions to common social problems >example: the proper process in courting a lady. Culture ensures the survival heritage of humankind >social patterns that are transmitted from one generation to another. Culture develops one's attitudes and values >example: strong family ties among Filipinos. Culture maintains the biological functions of the group >example: a man has basic necessities like food, shelter, clothing and even procreation. Characteristics of Culture: Shared >culture is shared through social interaction. Learned >example: humans are genetically design to rapidly learn language. Cumulative >example: young people usually learn the ways of the world through their ancestors. Diverse >culture was formed by many separate culture. Symbolic >example: the ceramics in China reflect the country's long tradition in pottery. Adaptive >adapt new trends of the present to be more relatable to the younger generation. Components of Culture Norms Folkways >fashion >fads Mores Technology Laws Language Symbol Values Norms -rules and instructions specifying what are expected of people in different situations. -norms may be wary depending on cultural settings, it follows the idea that what may be acceptable to others, may be unacceptable to another. -example: in Philippine culture, children taught to use words "po" and "opo" when talking to other people who are older than them as a sign of courtesy. Folkways -also includes ideas about appropriate greetings and proper clothing in different situations. -example: in Japan, it is a common practice to remove one's slippers or shoes upon entering a house, a private area, or religious shrine. -endure for a short time and enjoy widespread acceptance within the society. -reflected in such things as style of clothing and design in home architecture. Fads -also known as craze, refer to a fashion that becomes popular in a culture relatively quick, remains popular for a brief period, then eventually loses popularity as it either fades into obscurity or becomes a regular part of society's culture.
