The term ‘Constitution’ as defined by Merriam webster in legal terms refers to the basic principles and laws of a nation, state, or social group that determine the powers and duties of the government and guarantee certain rights to the people in it. The Constitution, therefore, can be described as the primary or fundamental aspect of constitutionally based legal systems in a particular society and can be either written or unwritten. • Oxford Law Dictionary: laws and procedures governing the structure and functions of national and regional government bodies in a nation and controlling the connection between the citizens and the community. • Prof Aziz Bari: The Constitution relates to a collection of rules describing the way in which the structures are to be formed, the powers to be exercised and the democracy to be implemented. • Oxford American Law Dictionary: A constitution is a collection of constitutional principles or precedents regulating a state or other establishment; • Thomas Paine:"A constitution is not an enactment of law, but of people who constitute a government, and a government without a constitution is a government deprived of liberties. A constitution is a precedent for a democracy, and a nation is merely a constitution. • Professor K.C. Where (1966) is "... the entire regime of national government, the collection of rules establishing and governing or governing the government." A constitution is said to have threefold objective. A constitution determines the authority of the state bodies, protects the constitutional rights of people and creates a bond and purpose of a state or country • The Constitution sets out the basic or organizational framework of the State. It informs us whether a country is monarchical or republican, parliamentary or presidential, parliamentary or unitary. • According to the cambridge dictionary, the word 'constitution' can be interpreted as the collection of constitutional principles regulating a state or organization, in particular with regard to the privileges of the citizens it governs.
