PART 1 1. You are asked to create a network design for VIT. You have options to choose either Hierarchical network model or Cisco enterprise composite network model. Considering your campus, design network with respect to both the models and conclude which one you will prefer for implementation. Use necessary figures and explanations for both the models.

The hierarchical model is a popular network model which allows scalability for the industry and it is also cost efficient. This model helps to divides the network into different layers. It consists of three different layer and they are Core layer, Distribution layer and Access layer. Access layer provides connectivity to the end devices like Pcs, laptops and so on. Access layer is going to start segmenting traffic upon ingress into the network. In distribution layer we can use modular switches that will aggregate the up links coming from the access layer. We can also run dual up links from access to distribution layer and do link aggregation as a result we can mitigate spanning-tree convergence and also take the benefit of extra bandwidth. Core layer is the critical layer of the network because it is concentration point for all the other layers in the network. It provides fast forwarding and fast switching for traffic going from distribution switch to access switch. Core layer is responsible for sending traffic either to the internet or to the different location via WAN. This model doesn’t follow modularity and having only three layers in this model makes things complex when the business expands. This model is complex and is ideal only for small business or office.

The cisco enterprise composite model is an integrated approach to network architecture that is typically used in medium to large organisations. Although the hierarchical network design works well within the campus infrastructure, but as networks become more complicated and complex as the size of the network grows to fulfill these requirements, it is important to change the network design to one that uses a more flexible model that divides the network into different functional network modules. The model offers all the advantages of the hierarchical network architecture of the campus infrastructure and encourages the architecture of broader, more flexible networks.

For designing network architecture for my campus, I would choose Cisco composite network model because Hierarchical network model is more suitable for small offices or a building. On the other hand, Cisco enterprise network model is suitable for medium to large network and VIT already has two different sites at the present. In the future, if VIT wants to expand its sites this model would work perfectly fine.

PART 2 2. Considering a LAN, list the designing policies you may follow for having a switching design for the network with maximum benefits. Consider all possibilities to improve the network performance including the use of hub/bridge/switch, switch placement, security, VLAN, redundant links etc. The list of consideration is presented below: Copyright © 2015-2018 VIT, All Rights Reserved.

Configuration of spanning- tree to avoid Root Bridge.

Configuration of DHCP, DNS and NTP.

Set switches to VTP server to maintain all core VLANs

STP needs to be configured as load balancer.

Port-forwarding needs to be configured using NAT inside the network.

It needs to support the number of End-user devices

Need to consider whether the trunks are required between the switch or not.

Layer 2 switches can also work at access layer, with layer 3 switches at the distribution and core layer

Configuration of port forwarding to decrease the redundancy problem in switch.

For the redundancy purpose I should consider: i) the number of access switches to be combined j) features required for specific applications to be supported.

3. The network administrator is testing network connectivity by issuing the tracert command from host A to host B. Answer the questions based on the network topology and output exhibited on host A.

a) Is the network fully converged? Copyright © 2015-2018 VIT, All Rights Reserved.

ANS: No, the network is not fully converged because the networks need to have routing information to get fully converged, but the route between the host A to Host B is not accessible which suggest that there is no routing enabled for the network in Router3.

b) Is router 1, router 2 or router 3 is missing the route to any network? If yes, mention the router and the missing network. ANS: Yes, Router 1 is missing the route to Router 3 and the missing network is 192.168.1.2 c) For this network, suggest a routing protocol and justify your selection. ANS: For this network, I would suggest EIGRP because it is standardized protocol. Besides, it also provides faster convergence time and also provides triggered updates which helps to reduce the traffic in the network.
