Network Design Proposal Prepared for: University of Maryland University College Prepared by:

I. Network Design A. Network Topology Technical Requirements The deployment of the University Network within the newly leased Adelphi site will be executed as a smooth and uninterrupted transition. Within the new property, it is University’s intention to establish classrooms and offices to facilitate students, faculty, admissions, and human resources. It is understood that this network will require shared services, such as printers and share drives that faculty and students will utilize for academic purposes. Also, there is a need to maintain a segregated network where sensitive data can be stored and only utilized by authorized individuals. This may include, but not limited to, proprietary information utilized by the Admissions department and confidential data maintained by Human Resources. This proposal will outline the procedures and processes to be undertaken to establish the network within the new Adelphi location. Proposed Topology 

This network will employ a star topology

The star topology is the optimum network topology to meet the requirements laid out by the University of Maryland University College in the new Adelphi location. This topology offers an array of advantages tailored to the University’s specifications for a network. The star topology consists of several workstations all connected to a central server, with communications to that server passing through a controlled firewall. (See figure below)

Justification The star topology offers the best infrastructure for the network the University wishes to employ. First, the star topology is the most widely utilized network topology in the industry. This allows the network to be easily maintained due to its familiarity with network engineers. The star topology also had a redundancy build into its framework. Should one computer on the network fail, it will not affect the rest, being all of the networked computers are attached to and controlled by a central server. There is also an added layer of security, as all traffic to and from the central server must pass through the same firewall. This will prevent individual network intrusions from affected all computers on the network.

B. Cables and Connectors Note: (Students should consider the needs for both a wired and wireless implementation as your proposal should include both.)

Technical Requirements

As the University wished to implement both wired and wireless networks for the new facility, a survey will have to be conducted. The wireless access points will be placed in ideal locations in order to provide optimum WIFI coverage. The implementation of the wired network will require the contracting of trained electricians to install the necessary cabling within the facility walls and outlets for cable connections (should there be no preexisting wiring). Proposed Cables and Connectors The cabling to be utilized will be CAT6e with RJ45 connectors. A CISCO Aironet 2800 will be implemented for wireless access. Justification The use of the specified equipment is necessary in order to implement an effective network. The network will make use of CAT6e cabling as that is the standard cable type for a wired network and RJ45 connectors are the only connectors that fit the cabling. CAT6e can provide speeds of up to 1 GB/s. The CISCO Aironet 2800 offers the best performance for a reasonable cost of any wireless access points on the market. It supports 802.11ac Wave 2 with connection rate of up to 5.2 GB/s allowing support of the latest generation of mobile devices at high rates of data speed.

C.

Networking and Internetworking Hardware

Technical Requirements The primary hardware required to implement the network will include a firewall, switch, and router. Proposed Networking and Internetworking Devices To provide security on the network, the recommended Adaptive Security Appliance is the CISCO ASA 5508-X, which can range between $1,600 and $2,000. There are several switches that can be utilized for the network that can provide desired functionality. They include the Cisco Catalyst 3750 V2 48 Port POE Switch (estimated cost $200-$500), the NETGEAR GS752TP-100NAS 48-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Pro Switch (Estimated cost $500), or the Zyxel 48-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Switch (Estimated cost $400). The router will be supplied by the Internet Service Provider when they activate service.

Justification The CISCO ASA 5508-X is an affordable, top of the line Adaptive Security Appliance that will prove a safeguard to the network within the Adelphi location. The ASA 5508-X is currently in production by CISCO and has no announced end of life for technical support, unlike the CISCO ASA 5520s, which will lose support in September of 2018. The Cisco Catalyst 3750 V2 48 Port POE Switch, the NETGEAR GS752TP-100NAS 48-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Pro Switch, and the Zyxel 48-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Switch are all capable of providing the necessary functions to handle and direct network traffic. The decision to purchase will come down to direction for the acquisitions department.

D. Wide Area Network (WAN) Design Proposed Wide Area Network (WAN) Design The only Internet Service Provider (ISP) within the Adelphi area with an established internet infrastructure and able to provide the facility with internet access is Comcast Business. Their Xfinity Business package can supply the Adelphi location with internet at an estimated cost of $500 per month. Justification If the University agrees to a three year contract with Comcast, they will agree to run an internet cable connection to the facility at no charge. Due to the scale and scope of Comcast Business, and the current lack of area competition as Verizon has no fiber optic service on this location, it is recommended they be the top choice for selection for Internet Service Provider.

E. Computer Systems Hardware Proposed Computer Systems Hardware The hardware to be implemented at the Adelphi location will be the HP Z230 workstation. The estimated cost of a single workstation is approximately $500. Justification The HP Z230 workstation is the optimum workstation to be used for dedicated IT use. The workstation can implement Windows 7 Professional 32bit or Windows 8 Pro 64bit. It comes with an Intel Core i5 processor with 4 DIMM slots, to support up to 32 GB of RAM. Additional information can be obtained for the Hewlett-Packard website. The affordable cost of the Z230 means the University will remain on

budget for purchases of such equipment.
