Development and Impact of Strategic Intervention Materials (SIMs) on Students’ Academic Achievement in Statistics and Probability Romadel R. Peralta, MAEd

ABSTRACT This study aimed to develop learning materials known as SIMs (Strategic Intervention Materials) and to investigate its impact on the student’s achievement in Statistics and Probability. Experimental research design was utilized to investigate the impact of the Strategic Intervention Materials (SIMs). Pairs of individual from 60 heterogeneous Grade 11 students were matched to comprise the experimental and control group. Experimental group was taught using SIMs while the control group was exposed to conventional method of teaching. Both groups were pre and post tested. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation and t-test. The findings revealed that there is significant difference in the academic achievement of the students between experimental and control group based on scores obtained by the students in the pre-test and posttest. It shows that the experimental group made a leap in their post-test scores surpassing the scores of control group. This suggested that the SIMS has an impact on the academic achievement of the students in Statistics and Probability. This also, clearly proves that the enrichment/remediation activities through this project significantly helps the students to understand and master the Statistics and Probability concepts and skills. Based on the findings and conclusion School administrators, Mathematics supervisors, or subject coordinators may conduct training-workshop on developing Strategic Intervention Materials (SIMs) to be attended by all teachers to help them develop SIMs to be used in their classes. They are also encouraged to try SIMs in all other subject areas and find out its impact to their students later on.
