2 According to the textbook, deviance is “to refer to any violation of norms, whether the infraction is as minor as driving over the speed limit, as serious as murder” (Henslin, 2019). Back in the 1970/’80s, several murders were being committed and many of those were sexual homicides. Ted Bundy is a name many people know because of the crimes he committed. He sexually assaulted and murdered college students. In 2020 Netflix released documentaries regarding those killers, describing their younger lives and how they became monsters. Ted Bundy became a household name due to his murders. He is said to have killed 36 women, but the exact number will never be known. Girls in college were the main people he would go after. They would often resemble his ex-girlfriend who broke his heart. It is said that he used his good looks to lure women into his car. He would claim to be injured and ask for help, he would then take them to a secluded spot, sexually assault them and kill them after. He also moved around quite a bit so he would not get caught. He was an intelligent man and knew how to manipulate people. The media and all those living in surrounding areas grew worrisome when they had no leads as to who was committing all those murders. When he was finally caught and sentenced to death row the public was happy. People celebrated his death by popping fireworks on the day of his execution. (Biography.com Editors, 2020) During his trial, many young girls became infatuated with him because of his looks. They did not care he murdered a woman and would write him letters while he was in jail. He married a woman he met before his initial arrest and they had a child together. He also dated a single mother who had her suspicions about him due to him having a meat cleaver on his desk. But as he would with any other women he would deflect any questions. This is how we were able to stay hidden for so long, but he did get tired of the police taking too long to arrest him. During an

3 interview he stated, “I’ve been tempted, on occasion, to call or to characterize this spectacle, this trial, as a game.” (Williams, 2020) His killings were truly deviant, and the police made sure to end it. By sending him to the electric chair showed the public any act of this nature will be dealt with, with extreme measures. In an attempt to stop any copycat killings from happening. Doing this does show the public that any type of murder will not be handled lightly. There have been several books and shows/movies based on Ted Bundy. In 2019 there were two shows about his life. One starring Zac Efron and the other were the confession tapes.
