Mini essay for the prompt of the reading "the dew breaker"....

Description

1. As you know, The Dew Breaker is a novel in stories. Write a mini essay that discusses which chapter/story was your favorite, and why. You might remark upon the plot of the story, the characters, the commentary provided regarding the Haitian immigrant experience, or any other aspects of the story that were enlightening or interesting. Use at least one quote from the book in your mini essay. Of all the short stories that make up The Dew Breaker, my favorite would have to be The Bridal Seamstress. The story has unexpected turns during what would seem to be just a simple meeting between a journalism student and her muse. The dynamic between Aline and Beatrice is interesting and refreshing and the age difference allows Beatrice to teach Aline some things although Aline is the one conducting the interview. In the beginning, I assumed that the relationship between the two women would be like that of a mentor and mentee, or an older sister to a younger sister. However, after Aline completed her interview with Beatrice, she described the older woman as “a bit nutty”. Although the story was short, the way the author described both characters, their backgrounds and their professions made them easy to connect with and understand. Before reading The Dew Breaker, my knowledge on Haiti was minimal besides learning small facts from the media or social media. Although this particular short story did not provide a lot of information about Haiti, the tone of pride when it comes to their original country was apparent, even by the description of Aline alone. Aline was described as a “striking Haitian American girl with waist-length, amber hued dreadlocks and a gold loop in her right nostril”. Knowing the importance of natural hair, dreadlocks, gold, and facial jewelry to African and African-descdants’ culture shows how proud Aline was of her heritage just by her appearance. It is learned that Beatrice was originally born in Haiti and not Haitian-American since she expresses she has been making wedding dresses since her time in Haiti. Like any other country, I know there are areas in Haiti that are more prone

to violence than others, so to hear the story Beatrice tells about the Haitan guard who is also her neighbor is shocking, yet believable all at once....
