Description

The University of the People website (n.d.) describes collaborative learning as an educational approach to teaching and learning that involves groups of students working together to solve problems, complete tasks, or create products. Collaborative learning allows students to share opinions, support each other, and understand a bigger picture of assignments together.

Students of University of the People, from every country and every culture, are sharing information and thoughts in the Discussion Forum every week in Moodle, the online learning platform (University of the People, www.uopeople.edu). That is amazing. There are so many different ideas and points of view that we need to share and everybody can actually learn from that. That allows other peers to have new ideas and knowledge than people without Peer-to-Peer assignments wouldn't have. Advantages of collaborative learning are many, but the one I like the most is, "Peer to peer learning allows students who may be located very far from one another to build a global network. This also prepares students for the unique experience of working in a global community – a skill necessary for today's professional culture" (University of the People, n.d.).

I don't know if this is widely known or agreed upon, but solving problems together helps to: understand better difficult concepts, view problems and solutions from new angles, create bonds and allies between people, and sometimes even change someone's mind. Work together to reach the same goals and learn from each other are fundamental pillars of collaborative learning. In my opinion, everybody acquires experience or develops new skills during the communityoriented program. I started to read the comments of my peers on Moodle and I'm impressed how much they taught me. I'm sure that at the end of this term after I will meet all the fellow students in my course around the world, understand their different backgrounds and experiences, exchange comments, feedback, suggestions, and constructive criticism, I will improve my communication skills and have a deeper understanding of the material. All of these factors also help develop teamwork and cooperation through the system of peer assessments (University of the People, n.d.).

My experience in collaborative learning in UoPeople is at the beginning, but I want to learn as much I can from the group of students in my course. From the community-oriented learning program, I learned how to share opinions and comments

on the Discussion Forums and Course Forum in BUS1101, how to rate others' assignments, give them feedback, and positive criticism; I learned a lot from my other colleges in my course and their cultures, mindsets, ideas, and judgments.

Thank you for reading, GB
