PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action enhances actions of inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in CNS
Therapeutic Use General anxiety disorder(GAD), panic disorders-- also used for; seizure disorders, insomnia,muscle spasm, alcohol withdraw(for prevention, treatment of manifestations), induction of anesthesia, and as a sedative prior to surgery
Complications sedation, lightheadedness, ataxia, decrased cognitive function, injection site reaction *Anterograde amnesia:difficulty recalling events that occur after dosing *Acute toxicity: -oral:drowsiness, letergy, confusion -IV: res depression,cardiac arrest, severe hypotension *Paradoxical response: insomnia, excitation, euphoria, rage anxiety *withdrawal effects
Medication Administration IV Injection PO(oral): Oral Solution Tablets
Contraindications/Precautions *pregnancy risk D *Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to diazePAM, other benzodiazepines. Acute narrow-angle glaucoma, IV administration in pts with sleep apnea, severe respiratory depression. * Cautions- Neonates, renal/hepatic impairment, compromised pulmonary function
Interactions
Nursing Interventions Monitor B/P, respiratory rate, heart rate. For those on long term therapy, hepatic/ renal function tests, CBC should be performed periodically
Drug: Valproic acid may increase concentration/effects. Alcohol, other CNS depressants may increase CNS depression. Herbal: Gotu Kola, Kava Kava, St. Johns Wort, Valerian may increase CNS depression. Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Management of anxiety disorders, short term relief of symptoms of anxiety, anxiety associated with depressive symptoms. Insomnia due to anxiety ot transient stress

Take with food, tablets may be crushed, drowsiness usually subsides during continued therapy. Avoid tasks that require alertness. Do not abruptly discontinue medication.
