PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action effects are thought to result from a facilitation of the action of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the central nervous system
Therapeutic Use anxiolytic, sedative, muscle- relaxant, anticonvulsant and amnestic effects
Complications anxiety, aggression, trouble sleeping, confusion, hallucinations, depressed mood, weak or shallow breathing, dizziness that may cause passing out
Medication Administration IV or IM
Contraindications/Precautions myasthenia gravis, sleep apnea syndrome, and severe hepatic insufficiency, narrow angle glaucoma, respiratory insufficiency
Nursing Interventions provide fluids, assess blood pressure, pulse, and respirations prior to med admin
Interactions prolonged hypotension, seizures, drug dependence, renal/liver disease, actue alcohol intoxication, clarithromycin, carbamazepine Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness provide sedation, produce amnesia, reduce anxiety
