Expected Pharmacological Action Misoprostol inhibits basal and nocturnal gastric acid secretion through a direct action on the parietal cell. Can be used for abortion and or post partum hemorrhage.

Therapeutic Use Misoprostol is a proven induction agent in the second trimester for termination of pregnancy or fetal death. This is also used for control of postpartum hemorrhage.

Complications Diarhea, vomiting, anemia, headache, chest pain, gas.

Medication Administration Inserted vaginally.

Contraindications/Precautions Pelvic infection or sepsis, hemodynamic instability or shock, allergy to misoprostol, known bleeding disorder, concurrent anticoagulant therapy, and confirmed or suspected ectopic or molar pregnancy.

Interactions

Nursing Interventions Monitor patients vitals. Monitor patients contractions. Monitor patients bleeding post abortion. Obtain consent before administering.

Naproxen, magnesium, calcium and sodium.

Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Abortion completed successfully or postpartum hemorrhage is stopped.
