Antipyretc, non-opioid analgesic CATEGORY CLASS ______________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins that may serve as mediators of pain and fever, primarily in the CNS.
Therapeutic Use Analgesia, antipyresis
Complications CNS-> agitation, anxiety, headache. Resp-> atelectasis, dyspnea. CV-> hypertension, hypotension. GI-> hepatotoxicity, vomiting.
Contraindications/Precautions Contraindicated in patients with previous sensitivity and also in patients with severe hepatic impairment/active liver disease.
Interactions - May increase risk of bleeding with warfarin - Hepatotoxicity is is additive with other hepatotoxic substances, including alcohol.
Medication Administration PO-> 325-650mg Q6 PRN (not to exceed 3g/day (or 2g in patients with hepatic/renal impairment)
Nursing Interventions - Pain: Assess type, location and intensity prior to and 30-60 min following administration. - Assess overall health status and alcohol usage before administering acetaminophen due to concern hepatotoxicity.
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness - Relief of mild to moderate pain. - Reduction of fever
