Expected Pharmacological Action migraine medications prevent inflammation and dilation of the intracranial blood vessels, thereby relieving pain
Therapeutic Use - some medications are used to relieve pain after it begins - other medications are used as a prophylactic therapy to prevent
Complications - bone marrow suppression - GI distress - MI or stroke
Medication Administration antiemetics are useful as adjunct medications
Contraindications/Precautions - Pregnancy risk category B - should not ne used alone, but only in combination with other medications
Interactions - NSAIDS can reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensives, feurosemide, thiazide, diuretics, and oral antidiabetics - corticosterioids, alcohol, and tobacco can increase GI effects - NSAIDs can increae levels of oral anticoagulants and lithium - increased risk of bleeding
Nursing Interventions - monitor medication effectiveness - periodically monitor CBC, including platelets - monitor for GI bleeding - monitor cardiac status, especially in older adults
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness - reductino in intensity of pain - prophylaxis against migraine attacks - terminiation of migraines
