Expected Pharmacological Action Inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and H20 in the loop of Henle resulting in increased urine formation. Will also promote excretion of Ca, Mg, HCO3, NH and PO3
Therapeutic Use To reduce systemic fluid load, edema, symptoms of heart failure, renal disease and nephrotic syndrome.
Complications Dizziness, drowsiness, fever, headache, lethargy, arrythmias, elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, orthostatic hypertension, hypovolemic shock, cramping, anorexia, constipation, diarrhea
Medication Administration 20-80mg as single dose increased by 20-40mg q6-8hrs to desired results.
Contraindications/Precautions anuria unresponsive to furosemide, allergy to furosemide, sulfonamides or components.
Interactions
Nursing Interventions Use furosemide with caution in Pts. with cirrhosis, Pts. with Hx of electrolyte imbalance or encephalopathy, monitor for hepatic coma.
ACE inhibitors, hypotension, renal function deterioration, aminoglycosides, amiodarone
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Medication is considered effective when edema, weight or systemic function reaches desired levels. When blood pressure or urine output reaches desired levels.
