PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Inhibition of cyclooxygenase: inhibition of COX-2 results in decreased inflammation, fever and pain.
Therapeutic Use Decrease inflamation, analgesia for mild to moderate pain, fever reduction, dysmenorrhea, inhibition of platlet aggregation
Complications GI upset, impaired renal function, increase risk for heart attack/stroke.
Contraindications/Precautions Pregnancy, peptic ulcer disease, bleeding disorders, children with viral infections, older adult clients, clients taking: gluccocorticoids, anticoagulants, ace inhibitors. Ketorolac should not be used in clients with advanced kidney disease
Medication Administration Take with milk, food or water to reduce GI upset. Aministered first perenterally then switched to oral dose
Nursing Interventions monitor PPT, PT, INR
Interactions Ketorolac and other NSAIDs should not be used concurrently Should not be used longer than 5 days because of the risk for kidney damage
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness depending on theraputic intent: Reduction in inflammation Reducation of fever Relief from mild to moderate pain absence of injury
