Frequency/Times 3-4 times daily initially then 5 mg once daily as needed (not to exceed 20 mg/day)

Medication Portfolio Pharmacologic Classification: Anticholinergics
Major Side Effects Side Effects: Action: Inhibits Dizziness, confusion, excess GI drowsiness, motility, headache, structurally related to opioid insomnia, nervousness, analgesics but blurred vision, dry has no eyes, tachycardia, analgesic constipation, dry properties and mouth, epigastric atropine added distress, ileus, to discourage nausea, vomiting, abuse. urinary retention, flushing. Purpose: Decrease GI motility with subsequent Adverse Rxn: decrease in Angioedema, diarrhea paralytic ileus, toxic megacolon, severe allergic reaction
Therapeutic Classification: Antidiarrheals
Nursing Interventions Pre Med Administration: Caution pt to avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants concurrently with this medication. Post Med Administration: Assess the frequency and consistency of stools and bowel sounds prior to and throughout therapy. Assess pt’s fluid and electrolyte balance and skin turgor for dehydration.
Labs Liver function tests should be evaluated periodically during prolonged therapy. May cause increase serum amylase concentration s.
