IT101-8 Chapter 1 Study Guide

1. The term Digital Literacy provides an individual of acquiring the skills to live, learn, and work in society where all communication and access to technology is through digital platforms, such as social media, the internet, and so on.

2. Computer – A programming electronic device that is constructed to perform mathematical and logical operations. It has a system/memory that can store data files, various information, documents, and much more. You can also use this device to browse the internet to do different things for your personal use.

Hardware – This pertains to the physical elements and aspects of an electronic device such as a computer that is needed to operate or run on the system, the rest of the components that is composed of this are already considered tangible.

User – A user refers to an individual who uses an alternative personal account on a computer or other electronic devices. A user can also be defined into an individual who uses a specific type of technology. In this case, there are various types of users. Some examples of this would be home user, mobile user, power user, etc.

3. Notebook computer

4. A tablet is usually a device that is designed to be lightweight, thin and portable. This device also contains touch screen interaction with its users. Moreover, tablets are known to have batteries or power that can actually last longer compared to laptops. Some of the touch gestures of tablets would be: Double tap (quickly touching and releasing one

finger two times), Stretch (moving two fingers apart), Press and Hold (Press and hold one finger to perform an action)

5. The difference between a desktop and an all-in-one is their system and components. A desktop consists of a display device and a separate tower for it to process better. On the other note, an all-in-one device does not contain a separate tower. In this case, an all-inone system uses the same platform to hold both the display and the process circuitry which is why it is called an all-in-one.

6. A server is a system that would provide to the users some data, resources, programs, and much more to another computer, through the use of network. A server is also known to support and connect several devices all at once.

7. Mobile devices are actually being considered as computers as well. It is because devices like this can operate on their own with the use of their system, such as their memory, accepting data files, processing data, and producing, displaying, and storing the information all at once.

8. Characteristics of a Smartphone:



Screen Display -

Most smartphones equip a larger screen now compared to the old-fashoned models. They provide higher pixels and high-definition resolutions.



Hardware Sensors -

Sensors are helpful with letting the device interact logically to the real world. Some of the sensors are GPS enabled which can allow the user to track locations on their phone. Gyroscopes are also included with sensors, which means that users are able to have an automatic display rotation their screen.



Wireless Data Access -

Smartphones are equipped with wireless carriers, which means users have the choice to use their phone with internet. These are known as data plans and can be connected to 3G, 4G, and 5G internet.



Long Lasting Battery Life -

Smartphones nowadays already contain a bigger capacity for battery that leads to longer battery life. Some phones also have the fast-charging feature to further increase the watts of the battery.

9. The difference between voice mail, text, picture, and video message are quite contrasting. Voice mail is mainly on saving messages from the caller and playing it again later on the phone for the user to listen. Meanwhile, text message is a much more compact and brief way. Pictures are more of a visual way to show information or description of a certain topic. Video messages can be for the purpose of both visual and verbal way.

10. The purpose of these mobile devices are to make the users have an easier and more interactive way with their technology and the society from all around the world. In another case, it can make our life easier and a lot more enthusiastic. Digital cameras can give us the ability to capture a ton of memories wherever and whenever we want, being able to save and cherish them in the future. This device can also connect to TV’S and computers for us to view them better. Portable digital media players and game devices are to bring us entertainment and joy. Because of these two devices, we can always find joy and excitement anywhere we wish to go. Digital players can provide us entertainment by viewing movies, listening to music, viewing pictures, etc. Game devices also help us connect with other people from all around the world, improving our communication and social skills. Ebook readers are for those who want a more flexible way of reading and having their own adjustable preference for their comfort. Ebooks are

also much easier to carry around since with one device, you can carry a lot of different books already. Wearable devices are for those who want very small device that comes with activity trackers such as heart rate, count steps, sleep patterns, and more.

11. Digital convergence pertains to the ability of viewing the exact same multimedia content through various devices. Your device can easily be connected to a different device and it would display the same content of your choice. This method is usually famous with streaming movies, playing videogames, listening to music, etc.

12. The purpose of using technology in home automation is for the users to feel safe and much more secure in their own environment. Home automation technology can help provide a more advance and high-end security and sensors. Moreover, people purchase these smart devices to also have an easier way to interact or control with their home devices. Features like this give people the ability to have better control functions.

13. The difference between data and information is that data is a collection of unprocessed items such as numbers, symbols, characters, codes, and so on. On the other note, information is more on the users’ decisions and the data that is put to the context.

14. Input is when data or information is being fed into the computer for system processing. Output is for converting the information for its users and usually the display of content when input process is finished. Some input devices would be keyboards, microphones, scanners. Some output devices would be printers, projectors, speakers.

15. The purpose of pointing device is for users to easily interact or control the screen. It can trigger different types of actions. Examples of a pointing devices would be a mouse, joystick, trackpad, light-pens.

16. Hardware that can be used for both input and output are webcams, digital cameras, modems, pendrive, fax machines.

17. Memory is a much more volatile storage, this stores short-term data or information for quicker access. Storage on the other hand, stores long-term data process for permanent access. This stores files, application, software, etc.

19. Cloud storage is a service that provides storage for data and other content that allows the user to view the content online through web.

20. Backup system have the components of backup software, backup manager, backup storage. Users can back up their computer/laptop device through the use of USB flash drive, cloud storage, CD’s, external hard drive. Comparing this to mobile devices, their mechanism is much more internal as they use applications on their device.

21. The web (World Wide Web) provides information from a global library to anyone who is connected to the internet. Internet is more on the computer system or network that is connected to different servers.

22. The internet is an extensive network that has the ability to connect computers and servers globally. It contains a lot of different information and can allow users to communicate from all around the world. Internet of things is basically the general network of all connected devices such as lights, sensors, refrigerators, and other smart devices or appliances. People use the internet because they are able to browse whatever information they need and be able to socialize to different people as well. It provides them a convenient way of getting things done.

24. A browser allows the user to find and view information and at the same time, navigating through different pages. Meanwhile, a search engine’s purpose is for users to seek information through using keywords or phrases.

25. Social networking provides a way for individuals to connect and share business information with one another. This is used to increase brand recognition and promote products/services to other customers. Social networking can help the community share similar interest and ideas....
