Our society has been criticized for falling short in providing contexts that support the well-being of older adults. -

Drawing from the text/modules and the TED talk by Jared Diamond, imagine for yourself a culture/society that meets older adults' developmental needs and describe it in detail. In what roles can you imagine older adults?

-

-

Childcare - Don’t have to pay them - Have more incentive because they love the children - Have more life experience - Leadership or counseling roles - Again, more life experience - Can draw on things that have happened in the past - Can relate better because will have been through a larger variety of experiences - Teaching In what living-spaces? - Remaining with their families What shifts would be made to our cultural values, policy, or family life to improve the lives of older adults? What would a day-in-the-life of an older adult in this ideal world look like?

The biggest difference between the ways ‘modern’ and ‘traditional’ societies In traditional societies,

The main point of Jared Diamond’s Ted Talk to was to compare the treatment of older individuals in traditional societies and modern societies. In modern societies, such as most communities in modern America, older people are not widely valued. Instead, they are thought of as somewhat of a nuisance, a burden. Oftentimes, once they reach a certain age, the elderly

in America are moved into nursing homes. Besides the caregivers, there they only can interact with other elderly individuals, and their everyday lives are quite non stimulating. In contrast, in traditional societies, the elderly are treated with respect, value, and admiration. Younger generations look up to the elderly, depending on them to spread knowledge from their many years of experiences. Because of this change in value systems, the elderly commonly remain living with their families. They continue to have vital roles in family and possibly even the workforce. It is important that those in modern societies learn from this. It is time we start appreciating the elderly and begin recognizing their many years alive for their abundance of experience, knowledge, and love to give. This would be an ideal society. As Jared Diamond mentioned, the elderly could continue to contribute valuable services to society, working in childcare or as supervisors. They would be amazing in childcare for many reasons- they actually have genuine true love for their grandchildren, which comes with a strong incentive to treat them with the highest level of care, compassion, and caution. Also, they already will have gone through taking care of children of their own and raising them so they have experience. They could also be extremely successful in roles where they act as advisors, mentors, or educators. This is because they can pull from many more years of experience....
