Discussion Assignment Unit 4...

Description

Discussion Assignment Unit 4 For this discussion, I've chosen the story "The Beggar" (Checkhov, 1887). This is a great story that illustrates the sarcastic truth of the lawyer Skvortsov and the dishonest beggar Lushkov. Skvortsov discovered Lushkov's deception, chastised him for his shortcomings, and, according to his selfproclamation, pointed him in the right direction to improve his life. In the end, however, it is revealed that it was Skvortsov's cook, Olga, who changed Lushkov's life. It depicts a theme of change, struggle, desperation as well as kindness and compassion (McManus, 2017). Coulehan (2003) states that if it weren't for the example of the lawyer's caring chef, who quietly chopped the wood for him without expecting anything in return, the vain and self-righteous lawyer would never have continued (or even begun) the original mission of saving and guiding the beggar. Skvortsov's contribution was undeniable, but he spent the majority of his time judging rather than understanding Lushkov's condition or needs. Olga was the one who moved him and changed his mind by listening to him unconditionally and quietly without criticizing him. Couelhan nailed it with his annotation. The condition of each person is different. However, to genuinely support and empower others, it takes time, kindness, and a non-judgemental guiding hand.
