Description

Discussion assignment Unit 6 After reviewing the reading assignments this week, it’s time to put some of your new note-taking skills to use. Choose a note-taking strategy that was presented in the unit. Then, use your note taking strategy to take notes on the following: Smith, S., & Smith, R. (2015). Money trees (No. 663) [Audio Podcast Episode]. In Planet Money. NPR. https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2015/11/13/455941812/episode-663-money-trees 1. What note-taking strategy did you select? Why? I selected the Cornell method because it’s easy to learn and apply and helps to make a student creative while note taking. Using this method, the notes are neatly organized, summarized and easy to review later after reading. You can also be able to add more points later while revising or doing your research. It’s also one of the most popular notes-taking strategies used by students. 2. How will the note-taking strategy you selected help you study? How does this compare to other note-taking strategies you looked at this week?

The Cornell method will help me be very efficient way in taking notes in class, and also when preparing for exams. Revision is easier with this method and you get to understand better and retain what you have read. This method also helps one to reflect on their notes by summarizing what they have read in their own words. This will help be get better understanding of difficult topics, as I have to write my notes in my own word, paraphrasing help you understand a topic better. Often, this can already be enough to remember study notes and to successfully pass an exam. You can also continually add to your notes while doing your research later after note taking. This will help me reconcile my notes with the ideas I get from doing my research and add more content to my notes that will be helpful in revision. Other note taking strategies are: The Outline method – This is a structured way of note-taking that saves a lot of time needed for editing. It uses bullet points for different topics and subtopics. The advantage is that key points are listed in a logical way. Lists method – Is a sequential listing of ideas and includes short notes or long paragraph to define ideas more. This method involves a lot of writing so if you are in a lecture room you have to keep up with the lecturer which can be tasking. Concept maps - It involves dividing ideas into branches, enabling you to establish relationships between the topics. You start with writing the main topic at the top of the map and then keep

dividing it into subtopics using lines and circles for new ideas. It shows relationship between ideas and easy to read if you have a lot content because you will follow the flow of ideas....
