University of the People PSYC1504: Introduction to psychology

According to the textbook (Chapter 7) "The IQ test has been synonymous with intelligence for over a century." Discuss the strengths and limitations of defining intelligence based on the performance on a standardized test. How does the study of twins help us understand the nature-nurture controversy with respect to intelligence better? Do you feel IQ tests fail to tell the whole story of someone's intelligence? If so, how do they fall short? Have you ever taken and IQ test? What was your experience? Your Discussion should be at least 250 words in length, but not more than 750 words. Use APA citations and references for the textbook and any other sources used.

IQ stands for intelligence quotient. IQ is a measurement of your intelligence and it is expressed as a number. An IQ test is used as an assessment that measures a range of cognitive abilities and provides a score that is intended to serve as a measure of an individual's intellectual abilities and potential. IQ tests are among the most commonly administered psychological tests. Intelligence is the ability to think, to learn from experience, to solve problems, and to adapt to new situations. Intelligence is important because it has an impact on much human behaviour. (PUT FIRST NAME) Cattle believe that intelligence is not based on a single factor but that intelligence is a collection of distinct abilities. His theory of intelligence is divided into two general categories crystal and fluid intelligent. Other psychologists believe that intelligence should be defined in more practical terms. Sternberg also had another theory of intelligence he named triarchic theory of intelligence because he sees intelligence as comprised of three parts (Sternberg, 1988): practical, creative, and analytical intelligence. One should therefore “What is intelligence? Can it really be defined?”

Since the production and use of IQ tests, the instrument designed to assess intelligence has been the subject of debate. One should be mindful that intelligence can have different meanings and values in different cultures. There are at least seven different types of intelligences which make the IQ test inadequate in explaining the different dimensions of intelligence. The IQ testing tool may be bias toward different types of culture, gender, intelligence, socioeconomic and even race because the findings may be used to make inaccurate generalizations. The IQ tests measure a variety of skills like such working memory, fluid reasoning, and verbal comprehension. Dombrowski, claims that science suggests IQ tests are still not well equipped to provide meaningful scores for these separate abilities and should be interpreted only as measuring someone’s overall general intelligence. For example, the average score of an IQ test is 100. A person might score 130 and may be considered as being very intelligent; however, that same person may lack intelligence in practical smart or street smart. Does the IQ test represent an individual’s true ability? Individual IQ test scores can change based on the context. Some individuals are coached or their motivation to score high plays a vital role in IQ testing. If your motivation is low you will probably not score high. Others are known to try various strategies such as memorization to help them score high on an IQ test. That does not mean that the individuals are intelligent. It just means that the method makes it more likely for them pass the test or that they are more motivated. One of the biggest disadvantages of using IQ test is when it is used as a placement tool. This allows the identification of students with a low IQ at a very early age. Most of these students are labelled as being “slow”. They are sometimes placed in classes with students that are much younger than themselves. Such students’ potential may be stifled so they develop a poor selfimage and may give up because of being unable to reach an acceptable level. An advantage of IQ testing is that gifted students can be identified as early as preschool age. One of the biggest advantages of using IQ tests as a placement tool is that the cognitive strengths and weaknesses can be determined using such methods. No parent wants to hear that their child is “slow”. By using the IQ test as a placement tools teachers and parents are able to provide additional learning resources for students who need them. The cogitative development of both sets of students will be enhanced. Students with low IQ scores will be able to get additional help

while those with higher IQ will be given more challenging questions to help in the development of knowledge. The debate nature vs nature is on-going controversy over the years. Using twins as a study has really helped the debate in relation to intelligence because that the closet that scientist can get to a clone of an individual because they have the same genes. Twins may share the

same DNA but that does not mean that they are equally intelligent. It is believed that parent transfer there intelligent to their children but is that really so. Intelligence is not just base on genes alone but other factors as well. Some aspects of our behaviour and intelligence is originate in our genetic makeup, while others are b result of our upbringing, environment or our own hard work.
