Discussion Unit III

Hello Everyone, I will be reviewing the short story entitled Ghost by Edwidge Danticat. From the first glimpse of the title and pictures where a boy was lying on the floor and a beheaded art, I thought it would be a story from the horror genre. I always liked paranormal writings as they give you goosebumps and all. So I started reading.

By reading the story, you can visualize a picture of the Haitian people struggling to help their children fighting against poverty and drug addiction. It puts up a picture of the Haitians sufferings in the gang-dominated region and tells us how and why some people choose to be a part of the gang.

In the story, Pascal- the central character, is an ambitious, creative, and hard-working young boy whose parents own a restaurant in the neighborhood of Bel-Air. He wanted to host an on-air show, where he would talk about everything happening in his slum, including stories of gang members. While approaching the radio station, his idea not only gets rejected but also gets stolen. Moreover, a few weeks later- it was aired with a different name on the radio. (Danticat, 2008) After the duplicity, a night guard gets murdered during a shootout at the radio station in the nighttime. The next day, Pascal gets arrested as a prime suspect.

Discussion Unit III The best part of this story that I liked most and caught my attention is when Pascal gets released from jail and Tiye- the gang leader visits him and says: "You wanted to know what it’s like for us, he said. I just thought I’d give you a taste." (Danticat, 2008)

So overall, it is a story of a society where you cannot stay away from the crime world even if you are not a part of it. The only way to escape is to leave the place. When people hear the word - Ghost, they tremble in fear from top to toe. In this story, Danticat tried to show how the Haitians are getting terrorized by ghosts or gangs. I liked the story as it does live up to its name.

One quote: "You wanted to know what it’s like for us, he said. I just thought I’d give you a taste." (Danticat, 2008). One Paraphrase: While approaching the radio station, his idea not only gets rejected but also gets stolen. Moreover, a few weeks later- it was aired with a different name on the radio. (Danticat, 2008).
