UNIVERSITY OF THE PEOPLE COURSE: UNIV 1001 – AY2021-T5 WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT UNIT 5 TOPIC: SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING

1. What is a self-directed leering? What are the essential aspects of self-directed learning?

Well, upon my research and understanding of self-directed learning, it is an individually process of acquiring knowledge independently and inventively select and manage your learning activities. According to (IGI Global, n.d. , “what is self-directed learning”, para. 17). “An instructional process where a learner assumes primary responsibility for the learning process; and as a personality characteristic centering on a leaner’s desire or preference for assuming responsibility for learning. Some of the essential aspects of self-directed learning for students are self-assessing your readiness to learn. Through evaluating your current situation like your support networks e.g internet, laptop, books e.t.c, you’re reading habits, your research experience, your family and college support. After this set your learning goals and develop a learning agreement, do this by committing to the goals that you have set. Then start monitoring your learning process, by measuring your progress every day and be always motivate yourself.

2. What are your two biggest strengths as a student? How will these strengths help you become a self-directed leaner? Some of my strengths are: I am self-motivated about my course and I have the ability to do research and make good use of it concerning my field of study as well I can also access the internet for easy and accurate research. And depending on this strengths, am able to become selfdirected learner through doing my online research and reading course materials and connecting to different expertise under my field of study seeking accurate and developmental advices from them without a teacher of instructor.

3. What are your two biggest weakness as a student? How do this affect your readiness to be a self-leaner? The two biggest weakness I face as a student include the following: Expensive and as well poor internet connectivity, the unreliability of the internet connections in my environment affects my study because the internet providers are in 4G, but still very slow .thus, slow speed of connectivity, in addition the government also tends to block internet accessibility in the country

based on political reasons. Electricity shortage, the poor electricity supply in my region in a way that the electricity is very expensive and also not reliable because it can even take two days when it is not available. Inadequate financial resources, lack of family financial support together with the total shutdown in the country due to corvid 19 pandemic have directly narrowed my strength of learning. The above factors have affected my self-learning in that I find it challenging to have accomplish my tasks as per my planned schedule.

4. Describe at least three strategies to become a more self-directed learner. How will you hold yourself accountable for your growth as a learner? Well, some of the strategies to become a more self-directed learner are: Setting or identifying your goals as a student. To be successful in your study, you need to have goals that will drive you and help in filling your future needs. And you must understand the reasons to why you’re studding or what you want to achieve in after studding. Motivate yourself. Thought your learning journey, always keep motivating yourself to avoid the loose of interest towards your studies. Motivation also allows you to dig deeper beyond your understanding. Evaluating or measuring your learning progress. This helps you to track your learning journey to find out whether you’re making a difference in your studies or not. Decrease your fear of failure. Since failing is part of learning experiment you must always be ready to face it and be able to fix mistakes and seek advice where you did wrong. I will hold myself accountable to for my grows because I have goals to fulfill and I know the reason to why am studding and what I want to be in future.
