Two gallants by James Joyce...
Two gallants by James Joyce Among the aforementioned short stories by James Joyce, “two gallants” has drawn my attention because of its formal-behavior title. As long as my reading, the plot surprised me with contrast ending from the title. Our protagonist is Delehan who was considered as a leech on the verge of bankruptcy but, in spite of this reputation, his friends show no general policy against him (Joyce, n.d). Delahan and his companion – Corley were hatching a plan to lure a maid to steal money from her employers with their gallant behaviors. “I used to spend money on them right enough”, said Corley (Joyce, n.d). The story ended with a gold coin in Corley’s hand represented the success of their stealing plan. In my opinion, the title is kind of ironic. Two chivalrous men trying to dupe a maid were anxious about treachery. They were afraid of being betrayed by each other. Delahan’s eyes had searched all the Merrion street, under the lamppost: there was no sign of them (Joyce, n.d). The author described how desperate they were to deceive for easy money as hope. I found this story surprising, worth reading. Reference: Joyce, J. (n.d.). Two gallants. ESL-Bits. http://eslbits.net/ESL.English.Listening.Short.Stories/Two.Gallants/index.html...
