Unit 8 Discussion...

Description

¨Test taking strategies are cognitive abilities to deal with any testing situation well independently of the knowledge of the test content¨ (Dodeen, 2015). The strategies I will use to prepare for my final exams include the following: I will thoroughly review my notes taken from reading assignments and review of feedback from the instructor and my peers, working on the remarks that needed my improvements in certain areas. Also, try to explain to other course mates as this will enhance mastery of course materials as well as point out deficiencies in areas that I am lacking.

I will complete the quiz of each unit of each week several times to better prepare me for the exam as I will get some clues on the types of questions that I might come across and increases my thinking to better approach the exam questions.

I will take care of my health by doing regular exercises and take breaks from study and work to help me to relax when stress attempts to build up. I will make sure I get proper sleep and eat well especially in the last days of the week of the final exam, as these will keep me focused, energized, and make me more productive.

I will avoid distractions during study time especially those that will be counterproductive. I will completely focus while studying and avoid doing other activities at the same time like social media, or even work activities that conflict with proper exam preparation since keeping to my study schedule will help me better prepare for my final exams.

¨Test anxiety is a psychological condition in which a person feels distressed before, during, or after a test or exam to the point where stress causes poor performance. Anxiety during a test interferes with your ability to recall knowledge from memory as well as your ability to use higher-level thinking skills effectively¨ (College Success, 2015). This hence means that very little preparation or the lack of it and negative attitudes promotes anxiety, and reducing the stressors to a manageable level helps in combatting anxiety (College Success, 2015). I have had test anxiety a few times over my academic journey; sometimes before and during a test or a quiz and even an exam. Anxiety motivated me sometimes to do better and other times it acted as a blocker to my focus and reasoning. Below are the strategies I will use to manage test anxiety per College Success, 2015: I will make sure I start my preparation early. To do this, I will take the class and reading notes and review them regularly, practice quizzes and past exams, this way I will be confident and thus reduce test anxiety and increase my performance on the day of exams.

When negative thoughts try to get out of control I will take a break, meditate and clear my mind. To clear my mind I will recall a pleasant memory for a short time that will help me relax fully, then I will repeat to myself positive affirmations firmly. When I feel a lot better I will proceed with my studies, with little or no test anxiety.

I will avoid the feeling of hunger and energy drinks before the exam as these only contribute to more anxiety, and will endeavor to sleep well especially in the last days off the week of the exam. This way I will face the exam with a sharp mind and positive energy.

Before I begin my exam I will try my best to be calm by using some relaxation techniques like taking deep breaths and moving the part of my body I feel is to tense.
