Description

Advocacy by definition is the act or process of supporting a cause or proposal. “Ewbank’s study (2011) confirms that advocacy is largely viewed as promotion and awareness, while some school librarians believe advocacy to be about political actions rather than local actions” (Kachel, 2017). Seeking to represent the attention of another is involved in advocacy (Cohen, 2004) and it can offer benefits for one another that would be represented by advocates. To identify and target specific influential stakeholders who share similar concerns involves a deeper level of strategizing on advocacies through building partnerships (Kachel, 2017). Causes that would reform basic institutions and programs of government, family, or economic relationships, and fundamental rights of individuals and legal entities are what some advocates represent (Cohen, 2004).

Twitter is often used as a platform to promote various advocacies. Some of these advocacies are health or politics related. One of the research journals assessed the frequency of mentions of indoor tanning and tanning health risks on Twitter. Over the 2-week collection period, 154 496 tweets mentioned indoor tanning: that is 7·7 per minute. Because of Twitter’s broad reach, especially among young adults, health advocates should consider increasing the use of Twitter and other online platforms to communicate public health and cancer prevention messages. Combining the expertise of skin cancer and health communication researchers, public health advocates, and social media experts might be necessary to develop the effective cancer prevention campaigns (Chren et.al., 2014).

Twitter is also an effective tool for political campaigns, influencing democratic outcomes, and produce offline benefits that help the candidates achieve their goals (LaMarre & Suzuki-Lambrecht, 2013). Political campaigns have effects on election outcomes. Politicians use twitter to build engagement to voters. They have also used trolls to create confusion or worst make negative issues against their political rival. They have made twitter one of their political battlefields in throwing false or baseless accusations to each other just to gather the attention of the society. Twitter has been credited for its ability to quickly gather, connect, and engage people of common political goals and aspirations (Christakis & Fowler, 2009; Salkowitz, 2010; LaMarre & Suzuki-Lambrecht, 2013).

According to a previous study in 2010, users tend to retweet messages which contain hashtags and URLs, this conclusion was based off from the data gathered wherein 11% of all tweets from random samples are retweets. The retweet feature of Twitter enables users to repost a message from other use and share it on their own followers. Aside from this, the use of hashtags and @mentions in a tweet is a great help in spreading advocacies and influencing people....
