Angie Lopez EN 102- Spring 2021 Professor Schiebe Essay #3: Poetry Analysis/Reflection Feelings in words Poetry has always played an important role in people's lives and was always used as a

source of inspiration, and it still is."Pluto Shits on the Universe" by Fatimah Asghar describes

how chaotic Pluto is. “Good Bones" by Maggie Smith describes the worthiness of a mother, how

harsh the world can be, and its reality. These two poems are written in the same tone which is

why it drives attention towards them.

“Pluto Shits on the Universe” by Fatimah Asghar uses personification since

“Pluto” is the speaker who is talking about what he sees in the solar system. Asghar's poem says,

"Fuck your moon. Fuck your solar system. Fuck your time. Your year? Your year isn't shit but a

day to me. I could spend your whole year turning the winds in my bed. Thinking about rings and

how Jupiter should just pussy on up and marry me by now. Your day? That's an asswipe. A

sniffle. Your whole days barely the start of my sunset." The writer does not care about time nor

days since he does not have to follow a routine that would require him to care. . This poem

brings much attention to it since it has an aggressive tone that keeps the reader hooked on it, and

makes them want to read more. . I feel drawn to the way the poem sounds. Throughout the poem,

the author's anger is seen through their use of metaphors and personification. This is what keeps

me as a reader hooked on the poem.

“Good Bones” by Maggie Smith is a poem based on the feelings of a mother, and how

she feels about the world and what it is becoming. Since this poem is written in the first person

we can connect with the writer and feel that emotion and the tone she is trying to convey. Smith

writes “I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least, fifty percent terrible, and that’s a

conservative estimate, though I keep this from my children. For every bird, there is a stone

thrown at a bird. For every loved child, a child broken, bagged, sunk in a lake. Life is short and

the world is at least half terrible, and for every kind stranger, there is one who would break you,

though I keep this from my children.” We see many repetitions that she uses to express how she

feels. The tone is sad, even with some anger. This is especially so when she says, “For every

loved child, a child broken, bagged, sunk in a lake.”(Lines 9-10). You can feel the frustration she

feels of just the thought of what environment her children will grow up in since she knows how

the world is.

In conclusion, both of these poems convey almost the same kind of emotion

of anger and sadness. The tone is very unique and well expressed; you can feel it and hear it

when reading it. Readers cannot always connect with authors and the emotions they want to

convey in their works. However, these two poems in such a way that readers can connect with

the authors' pain, frustration, or anger....
