Description

Domestic violence 1.

Agencies of socialisation for boys/men are either carried out by parents in the family, through adolescent peer groups or the media/tv/films ect. 1. When men feel they’re losing control they have the tendency to resort to violence as a means to restore their masculinity. Another reason for men resorting to violence is because they felt they had to as a means from stopping their partners from leaving them or to discipline them. 2. The concept of ‘crisis in masculinity’ may be that men fear that their masculinity is in jeopardy or under threat from the things their partners may say, do or ask, and things such as women and men employment have diminished the man’s status as ‘head of the household’ or ‘the breadwinner’ so sociologist may think that men use violence to reassert their status and masculinity. 3. Brookman has shown that when men feel that their power is threatened, they resort to violence as a means to restore that power, however her sample was a very biased one because she only interviewed men who were convicted for murder and abuse.

Marxist feminist views on domestic violence : Women absorb anger – The Marxist-Feminist interpretation of this is that with domestic violence some of it is due to women just absorbing the anger of the proletariat after they’ve come back from work because they are exploited, they direct that anger towards the Bourgeois and their wives/partners.

Radical feminist view on domestic violence: Radical feminists, following their general pattern, do not view domestic violence as an individual act of violence, but as a manifestation of patriarchy — i.e., a class action by which the male gender holds the female gender in place, trying to show off their dominance and masculinity. Consequently, radical feminists take a particular interest in domestic violence and were heavily involved in starting the women's shelter movement, to provide support to women fleeing violent relationships.

Functionalist view on domestic violence : A structural functionalist would argue that deviance is necessary for any society. Contributes to social order. Societies remain operable by agreeing on ways that their institutions function. When a basic requirement can't be fulfilled within a family, domestic violence occurs.

‘Domestic violence is caused by masculinity crisis’

Agree

Disagree

Violence may be an aspect of me feeling anxiety from being unemployed or their economic and domestic roles.

5% of domestic violence is inflicted by women, but they aren’t influenced by a ‘crisis of masculinity’.

Some boys are still brought up in the traditional way and that is that they should be the breadwinner and the head of the household and some may react to that status being threatened through violence because it’s part of their masculinity....
