As a nurse we should always advocate for your patient, no matter what the situation is. In the case of Donna Penner, it is unfortunate she had to experience such situation. The nurse should provide proper empathy and concern for the patient. Indeed, the doctor and anesthesia are the ones in charge when being in the operating room, but it is important to pay attention of her vital signs. Drastic changes in vital signs may indicate the patient is in pain or something else is going on. These changes in vital signs should be reported to the doctor and anesthesia just in case they are not patient attention. Remember, the patient is not able to speak up for themselves, therefore the nurse should step in. After the patient has been taken to the recovery area, it is important to follow with a full assessment. To provide the patient with anything they might need. The patient has gone through a traumatic event, a psychologist should be called in to talk with the patient and family. This will help with the consequences and effects of the surgery; it will alleviate the feeling of concern for the patient. After given the okay to go home and being discharge from the hospital, the patient should follow up with a psychologist or psychiatrist. This will help with their mental status and wellbeing. This should be done until the patient feels like it. Mental health is so important to have, especially after such dramatic experience....
