Do's and Don’ts of Academic Writing in English Don’t use 1st or 2nd person. • • •
Appropriate when writing about personal experience (1st) Informal; too familiar Giving instructions; making suggestions (2nd)
Don’t use contractions. • •
i.e. I’m, don’t, won’t avoid abbreviation; acronyms
Don’t use words like things, stuff, good, and bad. •
Vague; too general
Don’t use expressions like etc. or so on. • •
non- descriptive use appropriate transitions (In addition; moreover; thus)
Don’t start a sentence with a coordinating conjunction. • •
and, but, or, so, for, yet, nor FANBOYS
Do cite sources both in-text and end of text. • • •
APA (author, year) (References) Any and every outside source that is used needs to be cited. If you use Wikipedia, try your best to locate the original source.
Do include a heading and a title for each of the assignments. • •
Left aligned: name, date, assignment Center aligned: not bolded, 12 pt font, same font style
Do capitalize I when writing it as a personal pronoun. •
Do not use lowercase “i”
Do write out the complete word, avoid abbreviations. •
