DQ 3

Please elaborate including the following issues: - When something is reproduced for so many times is that art? What's the importance of the mechanical reproducibility of the art? What was the impact on mechanical reproducibility on the society? - What is the message in Walter Benjamin's article? - Is photography art, or contribution to the art? Is it just a tool used by artists? - How and why Henry Peach Robinson created Fading Away? What was the reason? - Photography has impacted the world of art and influenced some changes in the area of accessibility to art. If mechanical reproduction created revolution, what is happening now with the digitalization?

 In my opinion, what makes an Art to be always great and enjoyable is its uniqueness and originality. But when the exact same type of art is mechanically reproduced, it loses its sense of originality and uniqueness. Nowadays it became easier to reproduce art because of the advancement in technology. People are reproducing more and creating more styles of art through those innovations. So, I believe it is still art. The importance of the mechanical reproducibility of an art is that it inspires artists to make different styles. When something is reproduced in a new way/style then it encourages others to try their own version of the art. The impact on society is great. As more art works are reproduced then more people are getting access or ways to enjoy the reproduced work. This makes people curious and encourages them to be interested in the art and they try to find the difference with the original to feed their curiosity which intern results in high interest in art in general.  The barrier that only few people can have opportunity watching and acquiring artistic crafts has been broken because of mechanical reproduction. Walter Benjamin said, "its presence in time and space, its unique existence at the place where it happens to be". He also said, "Mechanical reproduction of art changes the reaction of the masses toward art".  Yes, photography is an art. I believe photography is one form of an art as much as painting and making sculptures is. Photographs are like paintings with more detailed compositions and meanings. It is not about just taking photos; it needs a skill to take the best one.

 Henry Peach Robinson made “Fading Away” in 1858. It shows a peaceful death of a young girl surrounded by her grieving family. In my opinion, Henry Peach created “Fading Away” to show people that death is inevitable, and we must learn to accept it and live our life to the fullest. His work created a lot of controversy at that time. People thought it was too painful regardless of it being imaginary. Henry believed that a camera is a tool just like a brush is. He wanted to separate photography from science and classify it as art.  Nowadays anyone can make copies of photos and can edit them easily. All due to the advancement in technology and social media platforms. Digitalization have simplified the reproduction of photos and other forms of art. Anyone can manipulate photos through different apps or a software that allows editing. Digitalization has allowed photos to be manipulated to the point that you can create a situation that never existed in the first place. For example, by editing a photo that was taken in a battle field, you can change the perspective of the viewer that that event took place somewhere else. Social media platforms always use manipulated photos to add credibility to their story which confuses people and make them skeptical. That is why nowadays there is no way you can believe any photo without enough proof that is the real one....
