Description

Dracula Summary Harker’s journal directed at his fiancée. Travels to Count Dracula’s castle. The fear of the West – British Empire. More “primitive” citizens, and superstition. Harker notices several strange things about Dracula. He has pointed ears, exceptionally pale skin, extremely sharp teeth, and a strong grip with the coldness of a dead man. Accidentally cuts himself and Dracula grabs him by the neck only letting go touching the crucifix. He also sees that the Count has no reflection in his shaving mirror. Dracula tells Harker to extend his stay at the castle with one month. He also warns Harker to never fall asleep anywhere but in his own room. However, he does, and is almost attacked by three beautiful women with red lips and sharp teeth. Dracula saves him. Dracula tells Harker to write his employer and fiancée three letters dated in the future. He manages to get a letter out of the Castle through a visiting gypsy, but Dracula finds out and burns it in rage. He remains a prisoner until June. Tries to kill Dracula in his coffin, but can’t. Manages to steal some gold and runs. A ship comes in from Russia with every crewmember dead. A huge dog runs ashore and disappears. Lucy meets Dracula in the graveyard and he bites her. Mina saves her, and tries to stop her sleepwalking. Then she heard news of Harker, and goes to be with him. The narrative switches to John Seward and his crazy patient Renfield. Mina writes Lucy saying Jonathan is a wreck. He has brain fever. Tells her to read his diary, but she seals it shut with wax. They marry. Renfield escaped to Carfax, and Seward follows. A bat is sweeping in front of the moon. Lucy’s health is bad. She starts a diary. Professor Van Helsing comes to check on her from Amsterdam. He can find no reason, but notes she has lost much blood. He returns home, but asks to be updated. He gets called over again when she has a change for the worse. Van Helsing gives Lucy a blood transfer, and she feels restored. However, Seward falls asleep on his watch and they find Lucy pale and almost drained in the morning. They give her blood again, and then Van Helsing puts Garlic flowers around Lucy’s neck and the room, saying she can sleep safely now. In the morning Lucy’s mother had removed the horrible smelling flowers and opened the window. They find Lucy near death, and give her another blood transfer. They tell the mother not to remove anything, and all is well for a few days. Renfield cuts a doctor and licks their blood. The wolf that had escaped from the zoological gardens attacks Lucy and her mother. The mother die and Lucy hides her diary entries. Lucy is almost dead again, and her third suitor shows up to give her blood since neither of the other can spare more. She dies, and tries to get Holmwood to kiss her. Van Helsing tells him not to, only on the forehead. When she dies her beauty comes back.

Van Helsing says Lucy must be removed of her head and heart when buried. Holmwood can’t believe she is dead because of her beauty. Mina and Jonathan saw a tall man in London, and he says it’s Dracula before slipping into deep sleep. She decides she must read the diary entries from Transylvania. Mina shows the diary to Van Helsing, who believes them. Jonathan remembers, and starts a new diary. The Bloofer lady – Lucy. Van Helsing and Seward finds out for sure that Lucy is a vampire, and include Holmwood and Morris on their plan to kill her. Holmwood is not sure. They go and see Lucy is a monster. She ties to lure Holmwood, but Van Helsing saves him again. They all realise they must kill her. Holmwood is the one who hammers a stake through her heart. Jonathan and Mina stay at the Asylum with Seward, who realises upon reading Harker’s journal that there seems to be a connection between Renfield and Dracula. They all meet to plan the killing of Dracula. Van Helsing tells them of the legend of the nosferatu / “Un-dead.” Mina isn’t allowed to help, since she is a woman. The men find twenty-nine of the boxes of earth at Carfax chapel. Mina sees Dracula in her sleep. They locate the remaining boxes of earth, but worry about how they will be able to steal them. Renfield lies screaming in his cell one morning, covered in blood. Renfield admits that Dracula had visited him often, but he grew upset with Dracula when he realised he has been taking the life out of Mina. Dracula then tried to kill him and left for Mina. The men find a terrible scene in the Harker’s room. Dracula disappears when Van Helsing uses a sacred Communion wafer, but he tried to destroy their studies and papers. Thankfully they have secret copies. Mina says Dracula forced her to let him drink her blood, and then his. They place Communion wafers in each of the boxes at Carfax, and in seal Mina’s room with them. One burns her skin. Then they leave for the estate in Piccadilly. They get keys to Dracula’s other places and ruins the boxes there. But in Piccadilly Harker and Van Helsing discovers one box is missing. Dracula comes, and they attempt to ambush him, but he escapes. Van Helsing tries to hypnotise Mina, and they see through her bond to Dracula that he has fled England by sea. They learn where Dracula is headed, and decide to try and intercept him in Varna (Russia). Mina comes, because of her bond to Dracula. Before they leave, Mina makes everyone vow to kill her should she transform into a vampire. They make their way to Varna, and Van Helsing arranges for them to board the ship as soon as it ports. Dracula’s ship ports at another dock. His bond to Mina might work both ways. They manage to kill Dracula, who dies in happiness. Morris dies. The Harkers, Seward And Holmwood all have happy endings....
