Dream big Little one analysis 2

Analyzing Content for Cultural Competency When looking for a book to analyze I asked my niece to let me borrow a book and she gave me Dream big little one, a book published on october 16, 2018 by Vashti Harrison. It was surprising that the book is quite inclusive and overall a good book for children. The book is a bestseller, written and illustrated by Vashti Harrison. Dream big little one is about 18 powerful Afrucan American women in history. The book is an inspiration for kids among the women you can find encouraging stories for children. Starting with Illustration, the book had a picture of three black women that is not the stereotype we are used to. When it comes to Tokenism the book only shows African American women. When it comes to visibility the book needs improvement, The book carries a positive message for everyone. The words are carefully chosen for children. The background and perspective of the author correlate with the story. Overall the book is guided to children however, especially for girls, the author did a nice job creating a non stereotypical book however, the inclusivity was limited. The book was analyzed following the guide for selecting anti-bias in children’s books by Louise Derman-Sparks. According to the guideline Dream big little one by Vashti Harrison is a biased book. Even Though, it was appropriate and it has a positive message the book is not inclusive enough. However, the purpose behind the book is to inspire girls that feel like an outcast. Therefore, I believe it is a good book overall.

Cultural Competence Prior to my knowledge I would have thought that this book was a perfect illustration of diversity and since the author is giving a positive message the book was a good book. However, now I think differently, I have gained more knowledge in cultural competence and now I know that the book is not perfect and is missing diversity. Based on the CULTURAL COMPETENCE CONTINUUM - CHARACTERISTICS the book falls in section 3 (Coleman & Pellitteri 2013). Section 3 because it does not give enough importance to inclusivity such as color and culture. The book is pointed to African American Culture (Coleman & Pellitteri 2013). I think I like this book because sometimes I can fall into feminism and since the book is about powerful women I can be biased when it comes to books like this.
