rich and poor could learn from one another and that the same education opportunities should be available to all” (Henderson, Garcia-Nevarez, Biddle, Valero-Kerrick, 2014, p. 43). Dewey’s ideas were to replace memorization with more cooperative, child-centered approach, that appreciated the child’s individuality and creativity (Henderson et al., 2014, p. 43). The Great Depression affected early childhood education because it caused many middle class families to slip into poverty which caused young children to starve. The stress that this economic event caused adults resulted in child abuse and domestic violence. School districts ran out of money, classrooms become crowded, and the school years were shortened because the districts could no longer afford to pay the teachers (Lynch, 2016). This caused the children during this time to not get a proper education. Piaget learned after interviewing children that they had remarkable responses to his questions after he would prob them. Piaget’s technique of asking questions and allowing children to explain their answers is called clinical interview method. He was among the first to propose a stage model of cognitive development which now influences the way we view children

(Henderson, Garcia-Nevarez, Biddle, ValeroKerrick, 2014). Piaget’s theory explains that children need to actively participate in the learned environment in order to learn. He referred to children as little scientists because they will investigate, hypothesize, and experiment (Henderson et al., 2014)
