Five paragraph essay: Homelessness In Ottawa Introduction: Many people believe Ottawa is one of the wealthiest cities in Canada. They say everyone in Ottawa has a roof over their head and food on their tables, but do they? Many homeless people in Ottawa do exist. Ottawa Health Association (OHA) have told us 27% of citizens in Ottawa have been homeless or are homeless; this needs to be changed. Some ways we can make a change in Ottawa's homelessness status is by giving them access to important services such as regular help with employment, food donations and housing facilities. If this were to happen it would not only improve the lives of the homeless but all inhabitants of the city by 85% according to Ottawa Health Association (OHA). No one deserves to feel alone in this city, so homelessness should be prevented. To prevent homelessness, everybody needs to work together and cooperate. 1st body: employment Firstly half of the people in Ottawa would rather take a backseat to the problems occurring with the homelessness in the city. The city of Ottawa Homelessness Shelter (OHS) survey of ten thousand employment agencies looking for workers asked this question “would you think of hiring someone who was homeless?” The answers were not surprising . As expected 75% of the employment agencies answered no. A huge reason there is a growing number of homelessness in Ottawa is because of the lack of employment opportunities. The Canadian Employment Organization (CEO) founded this organization to help get homeless citizens employment without fear of getting rejected and judged. Seven out of ten homeless people in Ottawa have been on the streets because of loss of employment and believe if they had the opportunity to get a job again they would get off the streets immediately. There's a clear link between homelessness in Ottawa and lack of employment. The Canadian Employment Organization (CEO) has made a plan to take action and to make thousands more employment opportunities for the homeless citizens in the city of Ottawa. 2nd body:food Secondly the City of Ottawa had one of the strongest healthcare options for homelessness in Canada. However food is the most important thing to survive, but for the homeless, it takes miracle to find food even for a day. For the past fifty years Ottawa has been in a downward spiral concerning homeless citizens. One of the reasons 25% of Ottawa citizens are on the street is because of we have not given them the support them. To prevent homelessness and hunger, not only government but all of us have to volunteer our time and resources. Many churches and communities need to start to donate and plan food drives. Since Ottawa is one of the richest cities in Canada the Ottawa Health Association (OHA) predicted that if the city of Ottawa's local food stores and restaurants donate the food they would be throwing out we can collectively feed 90% of the homeless citizens every week. Rather than what we feed now which is 20%. This would help them survive and strive for a better life. For the homeless citizens not receiving food and not eating regularly, it will affect their health conditions. They become sick easily. Once homeless gets sick, it is not easy to get back on track because they do not have anybody that take care of them and without an address cannot have access to OHIP . Some people get food from begging on the street which is illegal or buy food by the money they received. Others find food in unfortunate places; trashcan, picking it on the road, or eat others’ leftover. Even with these

resources some also starve and even lead to death. Because of food being so hard to find, 57% homeless people spends at least a day starving. While the population of homeless increase, the death rate of homeless people also increase. 3rd body: houses Lastly we need to make a change immediately to the housing faculties in Ottawa.Everyone in Ottawa has a right to a roof over their heads. No one in this city should or needs to be left out in the cold on nothing but the sidewalk; yet there are many living under carboard boxes or the lucky ones may couch hop from friend to friend until they outstay their welcome. In the City of Ottawa there are three homeless shelters one for teens one for woman and lastly one for men. There only three homeless shelters for the whole City of Ottawa. There are hundreds of empty homes in this so-called “richest city in Canada”. If Ottawa takes an action to let the homeless sleep in these homes there will be no one on the streets. No one should have to struggle to survive in -40 weather or +30. That is no way for anyone to live let alone the homeless. Conclusion: If someone you know could be homeless in the next year would you not want to help; of course you would. Initially the City of Ottawa had one of the strongest health care options for homelessness in Canada. For the past fifty years Ottawa has been in a downward spiral 25% of Ottawa's citizens are on the streets, one reason for this is because they have lost employment. Ottawa will continue to be a developed city if the numbers of people begging with cardboard signs on the street do not decrease. Having our citizens suffer from hunger and being forced to sleep in parks, under bridges, and not in shelters is horrific. Every year, the homeless population grows in Ottawa. In order to get back on their feet, they need help in every way. The homeless population is increasing drastically in society. People who are more fortunate than others should put social status aside and take an action to help homeless people to get back on their feet. to decrease the growth rate of homeless population, people should stop concerning about what people think of them and start volunteering to assist homeless people get back on the highway of life. People still sleep in certain places every night where humans should not. Because of many circumstances, people become homeless. Since they became homeless, people treat them differently. To make everyone feel equivalent and to raise the economy again, homelessness should be prevented. To make the world home for everyone, people should start planting the seed of kindness by helping homeless get back on their feet....
