Alejandra Lizama Prof. Vivian Wilson English 1302 12 October , 2014 Exploratory Essay Ever since founding the United States, people across the world immigrated to North America. In the beginning, the United States promoted immigration and saw immigration as acceptable because the Americans themselves saw one another as immigrants and the true “American” was really the Native Americans. Therefore immigration was acceptable, but as years goes by; the attitudes toward immigration changed. For example, the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 was passed to exclude Chinese immigrants from entering the United States (Hall). The reason for this is because the Chinese immigrants were taking jobs from Americans and discrimination that the Americans had toward the Chinese immigrants. The problem that the Americans had in the 18th century is similar to the Americans' issue with immigration nowadays which makes America conflicted on choosing to restrict, be against or be neutral about restricting immigration. Those who want immigration to be restricted believe that by letting immigrants, especially less-skilled immigrants, come to America are not going to benefit the United States. According to Retham Salam, when immigrants enter to United States, they intend to reduce the wages of existing immigrants. Not only does it harm the existing immigrants but, the immigrants

Lizama 2 who are less skilled compare to existing immigrants are taking away their jobs which leads to decline of an “average skill level in the American work place” ( Hall). Also according to W. James Antle , they feared that the excessive amount of immigrants believe the United states has lost control of protecting their borders so, they would take advantage of it and try to come into America illegally or immigrants believe that America does not really care about the cultural diffusion so they would try to come to America. The immigrants are wrong that the Americans does not really care about immigration because to those who are promoting restricting immigration “reject the idea of the U.S becoming a bilingual or even bicultural country” and only tolerate a certain level of ethnic pride such as Italian street festivals ( Antle). Those who are neutral toward restrictions on immigration believe that the United States should restrict immigration to a certain degree. They agree with the anti-immigrations that immigration reforms after 1980s has been focused on refugees and illegal immigrants. However, unlike those who are for restricting immigrants, they are all for a bilingual nation. They want to promote the national motto of the United States which is “ E Plurbius Union” or out of many, one and it means that any other culture or country that immigrants came from, the U.S can transform them into Americans ( Hall).
