Length: 1000-word essay (including in-text references and quotes, excluding reference list and the appendices) Task purpose: The purpose of this task is to provide opportunity for students to demonstrate understanding and knowledge fundamental to a functional approach to challenging behaviour. Task outline: The task consists of two parts. Part one focusses on the key elements of a functional approach to challenging behaviour from a behaviourist perspective. Part two is about the intervention strategies and their connection with the key elements of the functional approach. From a behaviourist perspective, when a student’s challenging behaviour is deemed serious enough to warrant intervention, thinking functionally forms the foundation of an intervention to reduce inappropriate behaviours and increase desired behaviours. The key tool for achieving this is the behaviour intervention plan. Part 1 – Key elements (approximately 400 words) Explain each of the following key elements of a functional approach to challenging behaviour:  Antecedent  Consequence  Function  Replacement behaviour Part 2 – Intervention strategies (approximately 600 words) Prevent or setting event/antecedent strategies; teach strategies and reinforce or consequence strategies are always included in the behaviour intervention plan.
