PERENNIALISM PHILOSOPHY

Tool for Teaching Perennial Philosophy I chose to develop and utilize a mnemonic device to explain my chosen philosophy. I will describe what Perennialism Philosophy is, how teachers can educate while using this philosophy, the significance religion plays in this ideology, and who the fathers of this philosophy are. Mnemonic Device

Principle-based Educational leaders Reading literature Environment Next generational Nature Intellectual skills Acquire understandings Liberal arts Influenced by the past Spiritual values Moral development Explanation of my Mnemonic Device Perennialism is a philosophical belief system for education that teaches that learning should be perpetual and that the emphasis should be on principles, not evidential material since details are ever changing. Mortimer Adler, Robert Hutchins, and Jacques Maritain, advocates of Perennial philosophy and educational leaders, founded their theories upon those of St. Thomas Aquinas and Aristotle’s realism (Ornstein, Levine, Gutek, & Vocke, 2017). The founders of Perennialism, Mortimer Adler and Robert Maynard, believed that reading “the Great Books”

("brief history of the great books foundation," 2018) provided students with a more specialized perspective to their education while reading literature. Perennialism utilizes the surrounding environment to teach students; believing that our milieu plays a large role in our education. Perennialism employs past eras to teach next generational students, as information and principles are passed from our elders to our students (Ornstein et al. 2017). Since Perennialism is closely related to realism there is an emphasis in certainty within nature and how it is a visible part of this philosophy (Smith, 1987). Mortimer Adler created The Paideia Proposal which was an educational manifesto which explains how the curriculum should include information which will develop a student’s intellectual skills and provide a total learning experience (Ornstein et al. 2017). Hutchins believed reading the great books would have the students of this philosophy acquire understandings of the world around them. A liberal arts education is important since it provides a general knowledge of the world around each student and builds up intellectual skills rather than specific skills. Perennials generally base their instruction on historical truths, therefore, this philosophy is influenced by the past (Ornstein et al. 2017). Perennialists believed that the learned subject matter should include cultural as well as spiritual values (Ferrer, 2000). This learning philosophy accepts that each student will gain moral development through the classic literature and the arts (Ornstein et al. 2017).
