Describe the nature, extent and landscape of the built environment industry and the organisations & personnel that are involved in its planning, design, development. 2. Describe the social, environmental, legal and economic performance requirements of the design & construction process. 3. Describe the management of the design and construction processes from ‘cradleto-cradle’, e.g. client’s brief through design, construction, handover, occupation and reuse/recycling. Including the role of construction professionals, corporate organisations, industry, clients and society. 4. Explain the importance of health, safety and welfare in the design and management, of civil engineering and construction works. (EID) 5. Discuss the differing priorities of construction clients and the sectors in which they operate.(SID) 6. Discuss the technician/graduate labour market in construction / civil engineering (CID) 7. Undertake construction site visit(s) and report on processes observed and the management of those works including the challenges faced. 8. EG4012 The Built Environment Component 1: Written Report: Individual Submission (80% weighting)

Task 1 - Characteristics of the Construction / Civil Engineering Industry Marks Describe & discuss the factors that influence the development of the Built Environment from the following perspectives: The quality of the presentation for this piece of coursework will be considered. There needs to be good cross-referencing of materials/images & references cited will be considered for the overall written work included in this work.

1a The ‘Demand Side’ Include in your work: the types of sectors in the Industry; the influence of the client on the process; the need for sustainability and environmental protection. Include at least one case study example of a real live project currently or recently completed. 1b The ‘Supply Side’ Include in your work current issues present in the industry, such as: the habit of sub-contracting; the value of the Industry; the use of IT / BIM; efficiency measures in the production process e.g. off-site construction; contractual issues; etc Illustrate with at least one case study example of a real live project currently or recently completed.

1c Health & Safety Fatalities in construction are high when compared to other Industries. Explain what the underlying factors are for this situation and include a researched case study which demonstrates one or more of these factors.

Task 2 Construction Site Visit Assessment You are required to write a report on a live construction or civil engineering site that you have visited as a guest, based on the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS). Access to a site visit organised by UEL is via the Student sign up links available published on Moodle ‘EG4012 The Built Environment’ to which you have access. All participants need to make their own arrangements to book up, attend and to bring with them all the necessary PPE. 2a

Description of Site Visited The written description of each site visited should include a basic introduction to what is being built and the contractual arrangements / programme / companies involved. It should contain at least three labelled and cross-referenced photographs.

The choice of what to write about will depend on the stage of works, the size of the works and the type of facility being constructed, as observed on the visit. (Please avoid the use of internet materials about the sales and marketing elements of the development)

Component 2: Oral Presentation: Group Submission (20% weighting) Task 1- Roles in the Construction Industry Marks The common roles of personnel in the Industry are provided in list A below. In your groups of three – For the three different roles to research and prepare a brief written report as follows for Task 1a and 1b. You then must bring this research together for an oral PowerPoint presentation based on a real life project: Your audience is a group of Senior Managers looking to make a selection promotion 1b

For each of the three roles, explain the skills, temperament, knowledge base and professional links. Also, where their roles fit within the life-cycle of the ‘design, construction and maintenance of a building or facility’.

Guidance for the Assignment The word count should be in the region of 3200 words in total, Your responses should include a well-researched written account with a clear structure. To do well in this assignment:  Read around the subject – refer to core text books  Describe what you know and understand.  Use clear plain English, check your spellings  All images or photos must include captions and cross reference them to the text.  All included photographs must be included ‘compressed’ to email file size.  Read it through once written to make sure it makes sense.  Submit the work on time. Upload whole document as a pdf to Turnitin to help compress the file to less than max 20MB. Check your similarity.

All the work must be the students own. Work is to be word processed and this should be in a clear legible typeface and double line spaced, single sided. Calculations must be logically laid out so that they can be easily checked. Sketches can be in pencil with inked notes, CAD or Word, but must be scanned and included in electronic submission. All pages should be clearly numbered. Submissions must be properly structured, this involves pre-planning your work. A conclusion will be expected. The work must have a bibliography and/or a list of references used, properly cited within the text. All referenced to ‘CITE THEM RIGHT’. In industry presentation of information is of paramount importance. Marks will be awarded for the quality of the presentation skills used.
