Summary

This is a guide in palpation for the region of Elbow, Forearm, Wrist and Hand...

Description

Bony Landmarks of Elbow 1. Olecranon Process - Patient Position: Elbow flexed and forearm neutral - Locate the posterior surface of the elbow. - Passively flex and extend the elbow while you palpate the rounded point of the olecranon process.

2. -

Olecranon Fossa Patient Position: Elbow flexed Locate the olecranon process of the ulna. Slide your fingers superiorly and deep into the depression that is the olecranon fossa

3. -

Lateral Epicondyle Patient Position: Elbow flexed Locate olecranon process of ulna Slide fingers laterally and anteriorly onto the large, rounded bump of the lateral epicondyle.

4. Medial Epicondyle - Patient Position: Elbow flexed and forearm supinated - Locate the olecranon process of the ulna - Slide fingers medially and anteriorly onto the large, rounded bump of the medial epicondyle.

5. Radial Head - Patient Position: Elbow bent and forearm neutral - Locate the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. - Slide fingers distally onto the smaller radial head while passively pronating and supinating the forearm, making it pivot under your fingers.

6. Ulnar Ridge - Patient Position: Elbow flexed and forearm neutral - Locate the olecranon process of ulna - Slide fingers distally following the sharp edge of the ulnar ridge toward the wrist.

9. Lister’s Tubercle - Patient Position: Elbow relaxed, and forearm pronated - Locate ulnar styloid process - Slide fingers medially onto the deeper, smaller bump formed by Lister's tubercle 7. Ulnar Styloid Process - Patient Position: Elbow relaxed, and forearm pronated - Locate the lateral edge of the wrist - Slide fingers anteriorly onto the prominent bump of the ulnar styloid process.

10. Radial Styloid Process - Patient Position: Elbow relaxed, forearm pronated - Locate the lister’s tubercle of the radius - Slide fingers medially and distally onto the rounded prominence of the radial styloid process. 8. Radial Head - Patient Position: Elbow bent and forearm neutral - Locate the lateral epicondyle of the humerus - Slide fingers distally onto the smaller radial head while passively pronating and supinating the forearm, making it pivot under your fingers

11. Scaphoid - Patient Position: Elbow relaxed and forearm pronated - Using the thumb of one hand, locate the radial styloid process. - Passively ulnar deviate the wrist and slide thumb distally and deep onto the flat surface of the scaphoid

14. Hook of Hamate - Patient Position: Elbow relaxed, and forearm pronated - With the thumb of one hand locate the pisiform. - Slide thumb slightly medial, distal, and deep onto the small hook of the hamate. 12. Metacarpals - Patient Position: Elbow relaxed and forearm pronated - Using the thumbs of both hands locate the knuckles - Slide thumbs proximally along the long, slender shafts of the metacarpals

13. Pisiform - Patient Position: Elbow relaxed and forearm pronated - With the thumb of one hand locate the hypothenar eminence. - Slide thumb proximally onto the small bump of the pisiform.

15. Phalanges - Patient Position: Elbow relaxed, forearm pronated - Using a pincer, grasp with both hands locate the knuckles. - Slide grasp distally onto the fingers palpating the phalanges, proximal interphalangeal joints and distal interphalangeal joints.
