Based on the article ‘What Makes Cyberbullying So Popular?’, the writer, Romeo Vitelli Ph.D., discussed the issue of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a form of bullying through an online platform like social media.

In this article, the author argues that nowadays cyberbullying has become more common in our society due to advanced digital communication technologies. Thus, cyberbullying can be done through numerous ways such as texting, emails and social medias.

Additionally, there are different kinds of supporting details used by the author. The first supporting detail is research finding. The author mentioned a research made in 2013. The research provides that online harassment can be in two forms, direct cyberbullying which involves threatening messages or pictures and relational cyberbullying which is related to the spread of rumours. The second supporting detail is expert opinion. The expert opinion is from Shaojing Sun and Xitao Fan. They found that there are more female victims rather than male victims after scrutinizing over 1400 research on cyberbullying. The third supporting detail is examples. In paragraph seven, the author stated, “For example, male participants from Asia were far more likely to report being cyberbullied than North American and European males though the reasons for this difference remain unclear” to support his point of view.

Furthermore, the writer starts off his article with an irrelevant story to depicts cyberbullying. However, the main issue in said story is the impact of rape rather than cyberbullying. The author is supposed to portray a story which highlighted cyberbullying as the main issue hence this story cannot be regarded as relevant in supporting his arguments. Moreover, for objectivity, his writing is not biased at all. His arguments have remained neutral and this can be seen in the article that the writer is not completely blaming the perpetrators.

Other than that, the author’s arguments are considered as complete because he presented a sufficient number of support and was able to overcome any opposing points. Cyberbullying is a huge topic and it is understandable that the author covered only a certain area but the arguments given are sufficient enough to cater to this issue. In addition, the author’s points are valid as he begins his arguments by stating that cyberbullying has become a norm and further explained the cause before presenting his own views on the issue. He also made some reference from Journal of Media Psychology: Theories, methods, and applications pertaining to cybervictimization which offer credibility to his arguments because the source he referred to is trustable and legitimate.

In short, from this article, we can infer that, align with increasing use of social medias and technological advancement, the rates of cyberbullying victims, regardless of gender or nationality, will also increase. We can also conclude that, although not all cases of cyberbullying led to suicide, it is important to find solution to curb this problem before it gets out of hand.

Next, inductive and deductive reasoning. The first instance of deductive reasoning can be seen in the third paragraph when the author starts with a general statement, “Aided by the rise of new digital communication technologies, as well as an Internet that allows messages and images to be distributed anonymously, episodes of cyberbullying have become much more common.” Inductive reasoning can be seen in the last paragraph when the author starts with a specific statement, “Considering that cyberbullying is becoming increasingly popular, especially as personal computers and other digital devices continue to spread around the world, cases such as Rehtaeh Parson will keep on occurring.”

Then, a purpose, the reason an author writes about a topic. This article aims to inform its reader about who the victim and perpetrator of cyberbullying is, among other things. In the fifth paragraph the author stated, “As for the question of whether females are more likely than males to be the target of cyberbullying, research to date has been inconsistent. Though most of the high-profile cases of cyberbullying reported in the media have involved female victims (such as Rehtaeh Parsons), no clear consensus has been reached on where there are significant sex differences in cyberbullying victims”. This paragraph shows the author's intent to inform people on who is usually the victims of cyberbullying.

Finally, we will be discussing the author’s tone in this article. Tone is the author’s attitude towards the writing and the readers. One of the tones that the author displayed is objectivity. This can be seen in paragraph eight, “…also important to recognize how cyberbullying can occur in different cultures (for example, there is no German word for bullying while the term, cyberbullying, is rarely seen on Chinese websites.” The author here made it a point to include the fact that cyberbullying can differ in cultures and not to only focus on one or speak about it through a prejudiced lens....
