English as a global language: An economic trend? English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It is spoken as an official language in 18 countries. 1.35 billion people speak English in the world, about 360 million speak it as their first language. The importance of English is therefore very clear. However, the development of English as a global world language is connected with historical problems. I will discuss this development in more detail below. English is the global language of business and science. Especially in the academic field. You are requierred to learn English for especially the university, the appropriate use of English is necessary. Especially for students who plan to spend a semester abroad during their studies, the command of the English language is a prerequisite. But how far has the special position of the English language been classified in our society and when did English become a global language? The countries where English became an official language belonged to former British colonies. In this regard, it is not negligible that for several decades, especially the POC community has suffered from systematic racism, not only in the USA, but in many parts of the world. It must be clearly emphasized that language is part of a culture and in this respect it is also a tool to practice racism. For decades, the POC community has had to adopt their language to the white man, which in this case includes the English language. This is an essential aspect that should not be left out when talking about English as a global language. Through the cultural appropriation, to which especially POC people are forced, it comes at the same time to an impoverishment in the linguistic diversity. In order to participate successfully in society, one is forced to master English. Until today, English has been a tool for communication with other nations, in this case communication with mainly white people. The prioritized position of the English language is also widely followed, especially here in Europe, which is why 90% of all European school children already learn English at school. When debating this topic, it is also important to remember that a global language offers many advantages in communication. With English as a global language, we have a language with an easy grammar compared to other languages, that can therefore can be more easily be learnd....
