Aligned Learning Activities and Differentiation Student #1 Class Grade: 4

Academic Standard: Kentucky State Standard: RL.4.4 RL.5.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including but not limited to figurative language such as metaphors and similes, and describe and explain how those words and phrases shape meaning (Education.ky.gov).

Learning Objective: By the end of the lesson the students will know how to recognize and describe the simple similes and metaphors in texts and phrases.

Aligned Learning Activity

Students will be divided into groups of four. The students will be given a set of different sentences and phrases that they will have to decide as a group if it is a simile or a metaphor. The students will underline the simile and put an “S” over it and they will circle the metaphor and put a “M” over it.

Student from Class Profile and Brief Description of

Arturo is one year below grade level. He is ELL proficient and is native language is Spanish. For Arturo I will have him make a chart with Simile on one side and Metaphor on the other side. This © 2021. Grand Canyon University. All Rights Reserved.

Home Extension Activity

The student will take a story home to read that has similes and metaphors within the text. The student will have a graphic organizer which will be included with the story. The student will also have his simile and metaphor chart to take home to use. The student will have questions to answer such as, When the author compared ____ to ____ I could tell. The student will use the first part of the sentence, and then add I imagined, In my mind, I could see at the end of each sentence. The student should be able to tell what the comparisons were showing him.

Aligned Learning Activity

Students will make comparisons using their family. They will write a paragraph about their family comparing them to one another using similes and metaphors. For instance, the student may write about their mom and the sentence would look like this. My mom is like a bottle of soda because she is so full of fizz and then they would compare the rest of their family in their story.

Student from Class Profile and Brief Description of Differentiation

Beryl is a 4th grades student who is not ELL proficient. She speaks English and is two years above level in Reading. She at grade level in Math. Although Beryl is above level in Reading her comprehension skills are not that good. So, during the lesson she will be given paper and pencil and will be told what is important and what needs to be written down so that she can remember the details. She will also be given a tape recorder to record the lesson to help comprehend the lesson better (www.iste.org).

Home Extension Activity

Beryl will be given a worksheet with similes and metaphor. Beryl will have to decide if the sentence is a simile or metaphor and then underline the words that are the simile or metaphor. She will be able to use her notes taken in class to remind of the difference between the two she can also listen to the recording of the lesson.

Aligned Learning Activity

This activity will include the video Similes and Metaphors by the Bazillions. Students will listen to the song and we will discuss the difference between similes and metaphors. Students will volunteer to give examples of both to the class. We will decide if what they volunteer is correct or wrong. If wrong, we will help the student it make it a simile or metaphor. The students will write the definition of both words on index cards (https://youtu.be/uoSBVNUO2LU).

Student from Class Profile and Brief Description of Differentiation

Wellington is in the 4th grade and is one year below grade level in Reading. He is learning disabled. For this activity Wellington can sit and listen to the song. He does not like to talk in front of the whole class so Wellington and a couple other students will be put into a small group and work with the Instructional Assistant. They will be working on the same thing as the other students but in a private area. These students will be able to refer back to the song and they will have cards with examples of similes and metaphors (valottastudios.com).

Home Extension Activity

Wellington will be working on the computer. He will go to the website www.brainpop.com. Here he can play games that are about similes and metaphors. This will keep him engaged with the lesson he is doing at home (Jacobs & Fu, 2014).
