Peggy Michaud ELM-305 Type March 28, 2021 Julie Armbrecht Clinical Field Experience C: Literacy Pre-Assessment For this week’s Clinical Field Experience C: Literacy Pre-Assessment I was working with two of my mentors Mrs. Kabaso who is a homeschool teacher and Mrs. Paulson who is a 1st grade teacher. I was able to discuss with my mentor teachers about a lesson plan on how to teach a small group of students and finding a theme in a story. Both me and my mentors we wanted to create a lesson and a theme that my students would grasp. My mentors helped me come up with this learning objective. I am working with students who are ELL students Jacob and Ruth are in 3rd grade and Sarah is in 4th grade. Core Standards: Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1 Ask and answer questions as Who, What, Where, When, Why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. Learning Objective: The students are going to understand on how the characters will respond to events in the story. The students will be able to answer questions from the book such as who, what, when, where, why. The students will also understand the key details that are in the book. The Pre-assessment Activity The pre-assessment activity that I created for my 3 students was to help them with their reading, wring and spelling. I was able to record my students reading skills through multiple choice questions and they were supposed to fill in the blank questions from the storybook Sally’s Red Shoes. The students I was able to assess their reading skills after by reading the storybook Sally’s

Red Shoes. Then finally I was able to assess them by asking them questions orally from the storybook Sally’s Red Shoes. The main purpose for this assessment was for me to identify the weaknesses and strengths of my 3 students reading comprehension skills. This will help me provide the learning needs for my students reading skills. I was incredibly happy working with my 3 students individually because it helped me to determine their reading abilities.

My Pre-assessment for my three students Jacob: I was able to assess Jacob through Google Meet. As I stated above, using the pre assessment activity, I was able to record my students reading skills from the storybook, Sally’s New Red Shoes. The next assessment activity was filling in the blanks using multiple choice questions. Finally, I was able to ask him questions orally about the storybook that he read. From my observation, Jacob did not struggle when he was answering questions from the storybook. I did notice that Jacob was struggling when he was reading, and also noticed that he was not fluent when pronouncing the words. Jacob did not do very well when I was asking him questions orally from the storybook. Ruth: I was able to assess Ruth through Google Meet. My observation of Ruth through the assessment activity was my being able to notice that she was struggling with her reading. For instance, Ruth was not able to finish reading the book, and she was not able to sound out the words. As for the multiple questions, Ruth was not able to answer any of them. But I did observe that Ruth was participating when I was asking her questions about the storybook. She was able to answer all of the questions without struggling, which by observation tells me that she listens attentively.

Sarah: I was able to assess Sarah through Google Meet. My observation of Sarah through the assessment activity was my being able to notice that Sarah was not struggling with her reading, and she was able to read fluently, and sound out the words with no issues. I also observed that when it came to answering multiple questions from the storybook, she was able to answer all the questions. Finally, Sarah was able to answer all the questions that I asked her from the storybook orally. From my observation of Sarah, I was using different writing activities, because she is not in the same grade level as Jacob and Ruth. Reflection The learning objective for this lesson that my mentor teachers and I created which the focus was with the key understanding of details in the story book. What helped the students to find key details such as answering questions such as who, what, when, where, why. The informal preassessment I used to assess my students was orally questioning and answering, reading the story book, and answering multiple questions from the storybook. By using these three types of assessment I will be able to find out what the students understand about the lesson. I will also find out what the students have learned from their reading from the book Sally’s red shoes. Mrs. Kabaso and Mrs. Paulson gave me positive feedback about the pre-assessment that I was using for my students. Mrs. Paulson was familiar with this pre-assessment activities because she has used it so many times in her classroom with her students when working with small groups. The focus or strength of this assessment was to find out that are the strengths and weaknesses of the student’s reading. I have also realized that they are always room for improvement and growth when I am teaching the lesson to my students. The data that I will collect from my preassessment activates helped me to decide if the assessment was effective when documenting my students reading skills.

I can also change the assessment by using the KWL chart this will help me to provide positive feedback to my students. The feedback I will get from the assessment will provide me with a better understanding of my student’s reading skills. The information will allow me to create lesson plans that will help the students reading skills. My going to use what I have learned about pre-assessment and teaching of my three students to better myself as a teacher. For me to be a successful teacher I need to make sure that I meet the learning needs of my students with their reading needs....
